“You don’t know?” Storm growled. “Bullshit. Tell me the truth now.”

“The truth? I am.” Christ, my heart felt like it would explode out of my chest. I should’ve asked Eve what she wanted me to say in this situation. Could I trust Storm to not tell the council and Eve’s sons?

“If there’s something you know about Sugar, you need to tell me.”

There was a knock at the door, and for a brief second, I was relieved we were interrupted.

“Not now!” Storm shouted.

There was another knock.

“Fuck,” Storm said through gritted teeth. He launched out of his chair and swung the door open.

I remained facing his desk. The hairs on my arm stood to attention by the eerie silence and a keen sense ofher.

“Supper is ready,” Eve said.

“Come in, Sugar.”

Oh Jesus, it just got worse.

“Sure, is there a problem?”

The door clicked closed, and Prez returned to his chair. “I don’t know, you tell me.”

Eve sat beside me. She glanced at me but gave nothing away. “Tell you what?”

“What the two of you were doing at the Soldier’s clubhouse. You said you were visiting Jack because he’s yourfriend.” He made air quotes the way I’d seen Angel do. It was actually kind of funny to see my hard-as-nails president make such a gesture. “And Art said he went to make sure you were okay.”

Eve whipped her head in my direction. “I told him he had nothing to worry about. Jackismy friend, nothing more.”

“She did tell me that. I guess I overreacted. It’s Sugar, y’know. Gotta protect her.”

Storm rocked in his chair, his stormy-gray eyes ping-ponged from Eve to me. “My gut tells me there’s more, but right now, I don’t really care. Sugar, you can leave. I’ll be out in a minute. I need to give my treasurer some instruction before he goes to The Cities.”

She stood. “Okay. I’ll serve you both a plate.”

“Art doesn’t need a plate. He’s leaving in the next few minutes.”

I cut my gaze at Storm. “I can leave after supper.”

“No, you can’t. You’re leaving now before I take you out back and beat the crap out of you for speaking when you should’ve kept your fuckin’ mouth shut!”

Eve stared at me for a long second.

“Did you need something, Sugar?” Storm asked in an annoyed tone.

“No. Take care of yourself, Art. See you at Cash’s party.”

“Art won’t be attending.” Storm led her to the door and closed it behind her. Shit, the bossman was more than a little pissed. He turned to face me and pointed. “Do not speak for me again.”

I issued him a firm nod. Apologizing would only be to placate Storm. He’d see right through it, so there was no point. And, it wouldn’t have been genuine anyway. Eve was my priority.

“You know we’re spread thin with Wolf and Copper searching for the women and Track in Montana. Cobra has agreed to send his brother Hustler to help you. All you have is two weeks to get Deek settled, not a day longer. Understand?”

“Yeah, I understand.” I lifted out of the chair.

“Good. Get your shit and get gone.”
