I pulled out of Eve and went to get dressed. What she’d said about it getting worse had come true. It was time to pay the piper.

She flew out of bed, put the phone on speaker, and collected her clothes.

“I can’t believe this! Art is…” Maddox’s voice trailed off. “He’s too young for you! How can you do this to Dad.”

Tears streamed down Eve’s face as she put herself back together. “Your dad wanted me to be happy. Art makes me happy.”

“Bullshit. He’s just your boy toy.”

Ouch. He’s just upset, I told myself.

“That’s not true, Maddox. I love him.”

“What? You’re joking, right?”

“Please calm down, Maddox. If you’d let me—”

“You know, what? I don’t give a fuck who you fuck. I’m out.”

“Maddox!” Eve cried. “Maddox!” The little shit had hung up on her. She ran to the door, flung it open, and from the second-floor balcony, she yelled, “Maddox, wait!”

I wrapped my arms around Eve and held her tightly. “He’s just angry, baby. He’ll come around.”

She shook her head, crying. “No, he won’t. Didn’t you hear him? He hates me.”

I turned her around and cradled her face. “He doesn’t hate you. You’ll see. He just needs time to process.”

“Oh, God, I can’t lose him.” She buried her face in my chest and sobbed.

I could wring Maddox’s fucking neck for her hurting Eve. He acted like a child and not the future president of his father’s club. Even if he was upset, he could’ve given her a chance to explain. That would have been the mature thing to do.

“Let’s go back inside, sweetness.” I tried to coax Eve into the room. Fortunately, the parking lot below only had a few cars.

“No. I need to go after him.”

“You need to calm down first, then we’ll go to the compound together.”

“Neither of you are going anywhere.”

We turned toward the raspy voice. The owner of it had a gun pointed in Eve’s face.

It was as if my heart had literally stopped and lodged in my throat. Before I could react, Art pulled me behind him, shielding me from…

I recognized him.

From the Wild Hog.

It was the creep at the end of the bar. The one who’d been lurking around outside when I left all flustered, no thanks to Deputy Stanely.

Why in the hell was he here and with a gun pointed at me?

“Who the fuck are you, and what do you want?” Art held his stance, blocking me.

The man moved slightly to his left. “Get inside, Mrs. Knight,” he hissed, a menacing glint in his eyes. “Or I’ll blow your lover’s head off.”
