“I do. But we need extra bodies, and he is her friend.”

“What about Jack?” Angel asked with a confused expression.

“That’s Sugar’s personal business to tell, baby.”

“Okay.”

I looked sidelong at Jim and Maddox sitting nearest the door. When the Sheriff got here, he’d broken down. It was the saddest thing I’d ever seen. Fuck, I’d teared up as he cried. I imagined getting the call that Sugar had OD’d had brought the past roaring back from when Johnny was found dead from an overdose. Of course, Sugar’s case was different, but the similarities were too fuckin’ similar.

Cobra knelt in front of me. “Markey should be here within the hour. Mickey and Jax are coming with him.”

“Fuck. I wished it was only Markey.” I scrubbed my hand against my cheek. Cobra had contacted one of his pilot friends in Arizona to fly Markey home.

Angel shot me another confused look. I patted her thigh to keep silent. She probably wondered why I didn’t want Mickey and her son here. After all, Mickey was Sugar’s childhood best friend. I hadn’t breathed a word about Justin taking the paternity test as I’d promised him. Shit, I didn’t like all this drama.

“Need anything else, cuz?” Cobra peered over his shoulder at Karma. She had shut down Human Canvas and rushed over with Nova, who was with the other kids downstairs.

“Just make sure the build is secure.”

“No word on who might’ve done this to Art and Sugar?”

I shook my head. “Grizz is going through the security camera footage, but he’s not having any luck. The motel only had two, one in the lobby and one in the parking lot. Until we can talk to Sugar and Art to see what they know, we’ve got no hard leads.”

“Okay, I’ll be around if you need anything.”

“Thanks, cuz.”

“Eve Knight’s family,” a doctor called from the doorway. A nurse was beside him.

Angel lifted off my lap. I took her hand and went to stand next to Jim and Maddox. The rest of our KLMC family gathered around us.

“Doc, how’s my mom?” Maddox asked with his arm around his grandpa’s shoulders.

“She’s stable. I’m letting two at a time in to see her. She’s groggy but conscious. She’s very lucky after her heart stopped twice.”

“I want to see her. Me and Grandpa.”

“The nurse will take you to her, but just ten minutes. She needs her rest,” the doctor told Maddox.

“Doc, what about Arthur Panek? Any news on him?” I asked after Maddox and Jim left with the nurse.

“He’s out of surgery and is in recovery. He lost a lot of blood, but as soon as he’s moved to a private room, he can have visitors.”

“I’d like to see him as soon as possible.”

“I’ll let the nurse know. She’ll verify with the patient if he wants to see you.”

I nodded, stepping back, confident Art would approve.

Turning around to face everyone, I exhaled a relieved breath. “You all heard the doc. It sounds like they’re mostly out of the woods and will be okay.” I hugged Angel.

“Thank God,” she whispered, hugging me back.

“Let’s go see our baby girl. I need some Birdie cuddles before I go in to see Art.”
