“Tired. But I’ll be okay.”

“Well, we’re going to make sure you get all the rest you need. Right, Mad?” Markey shot his brother a severe glare. It was then I suspected Maddox had told Markey about finding me at the motel with Art. I had feared telling my sons I was in love with a younger man, but it was Maddox’s reaction I’d agonized over most.

“Yeah,” Maddox muttered, sitting on the other side of me. He took my hand. “He knows about Art.”

“I also know what my dipshit brother said to you. You won’t get that reaction from me, Mom. I’ll support you no matter what.”

Maddox growled, “Kiss ass.”

“Is that all you got? At least I don’t give Mom a hard time for falling in love. You like Art, so why give her a hard time?”

I sat back and enjoyed their battle.

“It just set me off that she was with someone other than Dad. And Art is closer to our age than hers. It’s weird.”

“Closer by like two years, doofus. That’s hardly scandalous nowadays.” Markey rolled his eyes. “Does he make you happy, Mom? Because when it comes down to it, your happiness is all that matters to me.”

“Same,” Maddox grunted. “But if he ever hurts you, I’ll kill him.”

“Now, now, don’t go dropping threats like that,” I told him.

“It wasn’t an empty threat.”

Markey threw up his hands. “Why? Why tell her shit like that right now? Obviously, we’d make Art pay for hurting her, but we don’t have to tell her.”

At least they agreed on some things.

I smiled and took my sons’ hands. “Art is a good man. You both know he is.”

The door opened, and Tina poked her head in. “Can I have some time with your mom?”

I waved her in. “Please come in.”

“We’ll be just outside the door, Mom.” Markey kissed me.

“Thank you, boys.” Tina smiled. She came to my side and hugged me. “Girl, you gave me the scare of my life.”

I waited for the door to close before I spoke. “I’ve never been so scared. I honestly thought I’d never seen my boys again, or you or Art.” I teared up. “How is Art?”

“They repaired his injuries. Storm is with him right now. You both are so lucky the maid had heard you and called the police.”

“I owe her my life.” I didn’t really remember much. It hadn’t taken long for the drug to set my heart racing after the asshole injected me. I recalled not being able to breathe and panicking after he left. All the while, Art was in a pool of blood, helpless on the floor. Neither one of us could save the other.

“Is there anything you need? They said you’ll be able to go home tomorrow if you continue improving.”

“No, I’m fine. Does everyone know about Art and me?”

“I assume so. Snow and Emilee probably told their men, who probably told the others.”

“It is what it is. My boys know now, so nothing else matters.”

“I’m glad it’s out in the open. You’ll see. It’ll all be okay.”

I smiled weakly. “I need to see him.”

Tina nodded. “I’ll go find the nurse. It’s probably easier for you to go to him than for him to come to you.”

“Right. Thank you.” If I didn’t see Art soon, I’d go out of my mind. I needed to see with my own eyes he was okay.
