“Bloody movies aren’t my thing.” Ava screwed up her face.

That I knew.

“If I wasn’t the maid of honor, I’d go in all black.” The idea of celebrating two people vowing to spend eternity together wasn’t at the top of my fun list.

“I saw the dress she picked out for you. It’s gorgeous.”

“It’s blush pink.” I hiked my eyebrow. “I don’t wear pastel colors.”

Ava giggled. “I thought the same thing, but Jaynee said you like boho, and it’s definitely that.”

“She just wants to torture me.”

The back door buzzed. Ire appeared on the monitor behind the counter.

“Looks like your man is here.” I checked the schedule on the computer. Unless we had a walk-in, I’d be here twiddling my thumbs until closing.

“Hi!” Ava beamed when Ire entered the room.

“Hey, baby.” He jerked his chin at me. “Did you know you have a flat tire on the front driver’s side?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me?” Welcome to Karma’s never-ending clusterfuck life.

“Nope, not joking. Do you have a spare in the trunk? I can change it out for you.”

I grabbed my keys under the counter. “I do. I’d really appreciate it. Changing tires isn’t something I know how to do.”

“No problem.” He took the keys and kissed Ava. “I’ll be ten minutes tops.” He strutted out.

“He melts me.” She swooned, exhaling a breathy sigh. I swore I saw hearts in her eyes.

Sickening.

“He’s one of the good ones.” I closed my eyes, so I didn’t roll them.

“He is.” She tilted her head. “Cobra didn’t call again today.”

“Good.” I stared at the monitor as if studying it, silently cursing the gods for her unfailing memory.

“Did something happen? I was used to telling him you were busy with a client or watching you argue with him.”

“I think he’s finally gotten the hint. I’m glad.”

“Are you really okay with it? I thought for sure you two would work through your problems.”

I looked sidelong at her. “Somethings can’t be fixed.”

“I suppose.” She bit her bottom lip. “What does that mean for Nova?”

“I feel like a broken record having to repeat Nova is mine.” I got it. Everyone’s intentions were good. They were thinking of Nova, but she was mine and doing just fine without her father in her life.

“Sorry.” She grimaced.

The phone mercifully rang again.

Ava answered on the first ring. “Human Canvas, how can I help you?” She tapped her nails on the counter. “Hello? Anyone there? Hellooo?” She hung up. “This is getting annoying.”

“It’s probably an elderly person dialing the wrong number or stupid teenagers,” I told her as I watched Ire enter the build on the monitor. The expression on his face seemed grim, but then he never looked happy.
