“Yes, there are six kids in my family. Five boys and one girl, Piper. You look a little like her when she was your age.”

“I do?”

“Yup. It’s the dark hair and gray eyes.”

I touched my pigtail. “That’s a lot of kids in your family.”

“We have a huge family. And one day, you’re going to have a brother or sister, maybe more than one each.”

“I’ve wished for a baby brother and sister for a long time.” I got excited at his words.

“Abe, don’t tell her that. We don’t know what the future holds.” Mom gave him a look.

“It’s happening, baby. Embrace it.” He reached for my mom and kissed her.

I giggled with my hand over my mouth.

“You’re incorrigible,” she teased him. “Now, both of you eat your supper. It’s getting cold, and if we’re going to Fargo, we need to pack a suitcase.”

“We better listen, so we don’t get into trouble.” He winked again.

I nodded, scooping macaroni and cheese into my mouth.

“Do you have any other questions for me, Nova?”

“Will you help me with my family tree project?” My mom usually helped me with stuff. Stein was always busy.

“You bet I will.” He smiled. “While we’re at the farm, we can work on your project. How does that sound?”

“That’s fine. We’re going to a farm?” I looked at Mommy.

“Yes, tomorrow,” she said. “Your dad grew up on a farm with chickens, a cow, and a couple of horses.”

Now I was really excited.

“And we still have lots of animals. There’s also a swing set and a treehouse.”

“Wow,” I whispered.

“You know how I told you Abe is in a club like Sadie’s dad?” Mom said, smiling. “And you know all the bikers ride motorcycles, right?”

“Mhm.”

“Well, your dad also flies airplanes.”

“That’s right. I can take you flying sometime.” As he watched me, his eyes sparkled.

“When Sadie’s dad, Lynx, pushed me on the swing at the park, I wished my feet could touch the clouds. I wanted to go high, high, high in the sky.”

“That makes me super excited, Nova. I’d love to take you up in the clouds.”

I think I liked Abe more than Stein.

I squeezed Abe’s hand as we drove onto his parents’ farm to drop off Piper. It was almost nine o’clock. As much as Lady M and Ben wanted to meet Nova, Abe had told them we’d be over after breakfast tomorrow. Hearing him take control on the phone with them had made my heart flutter. He was protective of Nova and me.
