Real love was our actions, which spoke the truths of our hearts.

The way we kissed as if it might be our last.

The tenderness mixed with desperation in our touch.

Passion and hunger.

Reverence and possessiveness.

When our actions were mixed together, they were the perfect cocktail of undying love.

Abe held my hand as we entered his childhood home. Nova was tucked into my side, eager to meet her grandparents and uncles.

I felt like I was going to come out of my skin.

We followed the sound of activity coming from the living room. It might’ve been a workday, but everyone was present. I wasn’t surprised. Meeting Nova was a big deal for Abe’s family.

“Here they are!” Lady M rushed toward us. “Wipe that worry off your face, Karma. I’m not going to give you an epic ass-chewing like you’re expecting.”

“You’re not?” I dug my nails into Abe’s hand.

“No.” She hugged me. “Just don’t betray my son again, and we’ll be fine,” she muttered. “I’d hate for you to feel my wrath.”

“Mom,” Abe hissed.

“I’m just putting the cards out on the table, son. This way, Karma knows the score.” Lady M hadn’t changed a bit. When in her good graces, she was a loyal and protective friend. Betray or hurt one of her own; she was our worst enemy.

“I agree with your mom, Abe. I should know what could happen to me if I betray you, as you should if you betray me.” I straightened my spine, no longer nervous. Now that I was a mother, I understood the love and devotion she felt for her children.

“Well, look at that. Little Karma Brandt is all grown up. Don’t let Cobra and Lady M boss you around.” Buff hugged me next. “It’s good to see you, doll.”

“It’s good to see you too, Jonah.” I glanced around the room, but Reign wasn’t around. Maybe she couldn’t make it. I’d ask Abe about her later.

“Will one of you introduce me to my granddaughter, please.” Lady M shot Abe an impatient look.

“Yes, Lady M.” He placed his hand on Nova’s shoulder. “Nova, this is your…” He paused. “What do you want to be called?”

Lady M rolled her eyes. “Honestly.” She bent at the waist. “Nova, I am overjoyed to meet you.” She took her hand. “I’m your grandma.”

Nova smiled but wouldn’t let loose of me.

“And I’m your granddad.” Ben squatted to Nova’s level. “Yep. Gray eyes.” He peered up at Lady M. “She’s a Knight.” He gave me a bear hug. “I hardly recognized you, darlin’. You’re more beautiful, I think.”

“Thank you, Ben. I’m so sorry for keeping Nova away.”

“I know why you did it. My damn sons are on my shit list for it.”

“You have gray eyes, too,” Nova said. “Just like Abe and me.”

“That’s right, pumpkin.” Ben winked and took her hand. “Come sit over here with your grandma and me.” He gently guided Nova away.

“You okay?” Abe snaked his hands around my waist and kissed my cheek.

“I think so.”

Micah approached then. “Hey. She’s a cutie.” He jerked his chin toward Nova.

“Thank you.”
