And my precious Nova. She had changed the dynamic in our family the day we met her. Her vibrant energy and curious nature had livened the rest of us up. We’d grown a bit stale and a little boring doing the same old things day in and out. Nova had given us the kick in the pants we needed. I’d always known grandbabies would revitalize me and bring a breath of fresh air to the farm.

I supposed I kept hounding my kids to give me grandbabies so I’d feel young again. Being a grammy was as much if not more delightful than being a momma.

“Lady M, you stop that smiling. Someone might think you’re happy.” Ben came up behind and kissed my neck. “You sure throw together a nice celebration.”

“Thanks. I think she likes it.” My gaze went to the streamers and balloons in the trees.

“She? Do you mean Karma or Nova?”

“Both.”

Ben chuckled. “I knew you’d done all this for the half-pint. She sure is a cutie.”

Nova squealed, kicking her legs while Levi spun her on the tire swing. Her joy reached into my heart and made it burst.

“She reminds me of Piper.”

“Me too. Only smarter, I think.” He wasn’t wrong, not one bit. I’d just never admit it.

“Oh, don’t say that. Your biker princess will get jealous if she hears you,” I teased him. No one could take Piper’s place in his heart.

“My eyes are on her, so I’m in the clear.”

“Of course.” I looked over at our girl. She was munching on chips and talking animatedly with Micah and Brady.

“Bone came to see me the other day in the hangar.” He kissed my neck again.

“And?” I stiffened, not appreciating my man mentioning it during Karma’s birthday party.

“He’s struggling again. Doesn’t know how to make things right with Cobra and Karma and doesn’t feel part of the family. He’s angry and hurting, baby.”

“This isn’t the right time to talk about this.” I turned to face him. “I’m sure Micah wouldn’t want anyone hearing you,” I whisper-shouted, scowling. “Why didn’t he come to me?” I fought to hold myself together, but it cut me deeply.

“I’m sorry. You’re right. It’s not the right time.”

“Damn straight, I’m right. Did you want to spoil my day?”

“No, baby.” Ben reeled me into his arms before I could go inside. He practically squeezed the air out of me. “I just thought you’d want to know if he unloaded on you like the last time.”

“Please stop talking.” My chest rattled as a sob formed, and my heart wailed. “Or you’re sleeping on the floor tonight.”

“Lady M, I will never sleep on the floor,” he told me sternly. “My place is beside you always and forever.”

My bottom lip trembled. I shouldn’t get so upset. I loved Ben with all my heart and Micah too, but my husband made me damn angry right now.

“I’m sorry.” He pressed a firm kiss to my lips. “I’m sorry.”

“Old man, you must be going deaf. I said, stop talking.” Why would he blindside me today when all our kids were together like I always wanted?

“I’m stopping now.”

“Good.”

“Grammy M!” Nova called. “Daddy says it’s piñata time!”

I glared at Ben, then pulled up my big girl panties. I wouldn’t let him or anyone else ruin the fun for my precious Nova.

“Alrighty, let’s break out the stick!” I clapped my hands and smiled.
