“You’re pregnant?”

“Mhm.We’repregnant.”

“I knew it!” He captured my lips and kissed me. I threw my arms around his neck as he put me against the wall. “I love you, Karma. So fucking much.”

“I love you too. More than I can ever express.” This was the scene I’d imagined all those years ago. I wouldn’t ever forget how happy Abe looked or how my love multiplied as he smothered me in kisses.

“Hey, you two.” Lady M knocked rapidly on the door. “Is it safe to assume the test is positive?”

“Damn, she is good, ain’t she?” Abe grinned and swung the door open. “Hell yes. We’re having another baby!”

Lady M squealed and hugged us. “About time you all filled up my house with grandbabies!” She kissed my cheek, then Abe’s. “Congratulations. I’m so happy for you.”

“We should tell Nova right now.” Abe peered down at me. “It’ll make her day.”

“Let’s go.”

Nova sat criss-cross applesauce with a cookie in her hand and a blank expression. She’d only taken one bite. It was totally uncharacteristic when I’d seen her devour half a dozen cookies in less than fifteen minutes. She loved Grammy M’s baked treats.

I didn’t have much experience with kids. Didn’t know how to talk to them. Didn’t know how to read them. I’d better figure it out soon.

“Do you like it here on the farm?” I asked her as I typed a quick message to let Hope know I was dealing with a situation.

“Yeah. I like it.” She sighed, staring at the house.

“You’ll be starting school soon. Are you excited?” I felt ridiculous, making idle chitchat. What next? The weather? If Piper were here, she’d know exactly what to say. She and Nova were buddies and thick as thieves.

“Sort of. I won’t get to see Sadie or Grayson, though.” She stared at me with big doe eyes. “They’re my best friends.”

“Yeah, but you’ll make new friends.”

“I guess.” She sighed again.

“Maybe Sadie and her parents will come to see you before school starts?”

“Nope. Jaynee had her baby last week. A baby boy. His name is Zane.”

“Wow, that’s great for them.” And how in the hell did a seven-year-old remember so much? I’d forgotten Lynx’s old lady was pregnant.

“Babies are so cute,” she squeaked, sayingcute. “I miss all the babies in Minnesota. Birdie and Dante are walking all over the place. And Angel is having a baby soon, and so is Mrs. Fuentes. So many babies, and there are no babies here.” She huffed, tossing the cookie onto the wood plank floor.

Obviously, I couldn’t tell Nova about my baby, or her mom might be pregnant. My phone chimed, alerting me I had a new text. I was rescued by Hope’s reply.

Hope: NP

“What does that mean?” I tried to decipher the meaning.

“What?” Nova leaned into my side to see my screen.

“NP. Do you know if it’s anything bad? Like does it mean Hope is angry with me?” My stomach tightened at the thought.

“Nope. It means no problem. Who’s Hope?”

I peered at Nova. “No problem, you say? That makes sense. What a relief.” I exhaled and relaxed.
