“Lady M, I’m—”

“Hush now.” The last thing I wanted was for him to apologize out of obligation. He owed me nothing.

“Okay.”

“Bye, son.” I ended the call and buried my face in my hands, rocking back and forth on the bed.

He’s hurting too, he’s hurting too.

Yes, but how long would this go on? How long did I have to stay frozen out?

It didn’t matter. I’d never give up on my Micah.

“Lady M, what’s the matter, sweetheart?” Ben touched my shoulder.

I swatted his hand away. “I’m fine.” I stood from the bed and went toward the bathroom.

“Bull crap you are.” He grabbed my arm, then reeled me into his arms. “What happened? Micah? I’m telling you, I’m going to blister his ass for making you cry.”

“Always a big talker. He’d have you hogtied in sixty seconds.” I chuckled softly despite the hurt in my chest.

“What did he say this time?” Ben rubbed my back, rocking me side to side. Of course, he knew my crying had something to do with Micah. Micah was the only one of our brood who regularly brought me tears.

“I didn’t say it had to do with Micah. It’s probably that menopause shit making me weepy. I don’t care what you say, Ben. Not having a period sucks. I’m all screwed up.”

“You’re not fooling me. What did that son of ours say to you? Stop blaming the change.”

“Thank you for being so good to me.” I kissed his neck, hoping to distract him. Not that we had time to get under the sheets. I had stuffing and yams to make.

“Woman, it’s me who doesn’t deserve you.”

I reared back and slapped his shoulder. “Don’t you ever say that to me again, Benjamin Knight. You are a fine, honorable, protective man.” My bottom lip trembled, my emotions simmering to the top.

“Then stop protecting Bone and tell me what he said.”

“He’s not coming to Thanksgiving. There. You happy now?” I shoved him in the chest, and he held onto me tighter.

Ben’s gray eyes bore into mine, his disappointment mirroring mine.

“I’m worried about him.” I wrapped my arms around his neck. “Now that he’s gone, I’m afraid he’ll never come home. I’m furious with you. You should’ve never let him go to Montana.”

“Sweetheart, I can’t keep up with you. I thought you wanted him to be president of his own chapter?”

“I did, but maybe I was wrong.”

Ben’s hands fell away and he stumbled back, a look of shock on his face. “Come again? You wrong? Well, I never heard such a thing.”

I gave him the bird and went to the door.

He bellowed with laughter. “I’m just teasing. Come back here, my beautiful Lady M.”

“No. I don’t have time for your antics.” Sometimes he was too much.

“I’m just playing with you so you won’t be sad.”

“Micah’s missing my favorite holiday. I’m gonna be hurt and disappointed.” I bit my bottom lip. “He called me Margaret.”

“What the fuck is wrong with him? He isn’t an emotional teenager.” His face turned fire engine red.
