“As if I had a choice.” He shook his head. Storm’s gray eyes displayed the same coldness I’d seen in my old man’s don’t-fuck-with-me gaze many times.

I had their violent, unyielding emotion coursing through my veins. All Knights had a lightning-fast reaction when threatened.

We were ruthless when warranted.

Fearless.

Unapologetic.

Such characteristics made me a damn good enforcer. But the need to defend at all cost had only ever festered in my soul for one person.

A woman.

Thewoman.

Reign Rochester.

“No, you didn’t have a choice.” I glared, hovering closer to the edge of exploding. “Why are you avoiding my calls and messages?”

He leaned forward in his leather chair, a stoic expression, and clasped his hands together on his desk. No words. Only a warning glint in his steel depths.

I scratched my chin, irritation igniting in my chest. His reaction pissed me off, except I couldn’t curse him how I longed to. Not yet anyway. I needed information.

“Christ, just tell me what the fuck is taking your computer guy so long to get intel on my girl.”

“Your girl? I thought she left you?”

“Damn straight, my girl! Why the fuck are you acting like this?” My jaw twitched in time with Storm’s. Since we were young, we’d tried to knock the other off the top dog pedestal. Cobra and Storm were equals. They were the oldest in the Knight clan. Growing up, my brothers and I had to flex our muscles to not show weakness, or we’d get picked on.

“You could’ve called,” he said through gritted teeth. “Thanksgiving is tomorrow.”

“What’s the hold-up?”

“Sometimes, these things take a while.”

“Bullshit. Time’s up. Get your genius in here.”

“You don’t call the shots in my club.” Storm stood and placed his hands on his desk. Tension radiated off him.

“You’re hiding something. What?” Okay, this reaction I hadn’t anticipated. Why the over-the-top defensiveness? He had to know something about Reign. I had a feeling I wouldn’t like it.

“I won’t stand for you making Grizz your punching bag.”

“Seriously?” I threw my hands in the air and shook my head. “Do you know what my woman is up to or not?” He must’ve sensed my fury if he worried I’d beat the crap out of his tech guy.

The corner of Storm’s mouth twitched. Oh yes, he fucking knew shit about my girl. Shit, he didn’t want me to know.

“Tell me,” I growled.

“My brother-in-law has been working with Grizz on finding your woman for more than a week. It hadn’t been easy to locate her. All her digital activity stopped over a year ago.”

I vaulted out of my chair. “Is she dead?” My heart seized as the words left my lips. If Reign had died, why didn’t I feel the loss deep in my soul, feel her feisty spirit leave the Earth?

“No, she’s alive.”

I collapsed into my seat. “Fuck, you scared the life out of me.” I filled my lungs with air and slowly blew it out. “So why all the dramatics? The mystery?”

“It’s not good, cuz.”
