More than just her independence.

Something I can’t put my finger on right now.

And if we keep arguing like this, I won’t be sticking my fingers or anything else anyplace.

“Sorry, Ethan. You’re right. I’ve had a long day, and all this is just…I dunno. It’s just weird,” she murmurs, puffing out a long breath, which makes me relax a little when she does.

I hate seeing her so worked up over nothing.

“I know it might feel like that right now, and maybe I shouldn’t have pushed my way into your life like I have,” I explain. “But I’m only acting like I am because I’ve spent so long thinking that there was nothing left. That life had nothing else to offer me.”

She looks up at me, not following what I mean.

“Meeting you is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Krissy. And I’m a guy who’s seen and done a lot,” I tell her truthfully.

“If you wanna go to work and pay your own bills, fine. But don’t shut me out just because I have plenty of money.”

She listens intently and weighs things in her own way, in her own mind and it isn’t long before she twists her mouth.

Trying to hide a smile.

“What?” I exclaim, suddenly wondering myself what’s so funny now.

“How much money?” she asks with mock suspicion, and her question and the look on her face make us both laugh.

Forgetting we ever had the closest thing to an argument I hope we ever have.

I seize the moment to hook my arms around her again, hugging her tight and close.

“More than that casino,” I tell her. “More than enough for me and you…more than enough for a whole family,” I add, feeling her body yield to mine fully at the words.

“What is it, Krissy?” I ask, still feeling there’s something she’s not telling me.

I could spend a year telling her things about myself and listen to her talk about herself for ten more.

But there’s something else.

“Can you just hold me?” she mews, snuggling into me as I eye the sofa bed that I know wouldn’t hold my weight, let alone my length.

“I like it when you hold me,” she coos quietly.

“I’ll hold you as long as you’ll let me,” I remind her. “But I want it to be forever.”

She doesn’t answer, but if I’m this close to her in one night, I wonder where we’ll both be if I give her the time she needs.

I can feel Krissy's tiredness, and despite my warning that her little bed won’t hold my weight, she purrs at my suggestion that we lay down together.

Slipping out of my wet jacket and kicking my custom Italian leather shoes off, I don’t want to lose a grip on Krissy for a second longer than I have to.

My body, my need to fill her with my seed. My instinct to throw her down and put a baby in her belly right here and now?

That can wait, for one night at least.

“Just tell me you’re mine,” I whisper to her, easing us both down on the tiny sofa bed that creaks and groans under my bulk.

She answers me with a kiss, and it’s not the snuggling kind of peck on the lips I’m expecting.

Flicking the bedside lamp off, it’s as if she’s a different girl in the dark.

And the hard yearning I feel to be inside her, part of me tells me Krissy knows what she wants too, but for some reason, she’s running hot and then cold when it comes to just how close she wants to get with me now that we’re completely alone.

“All of me yours?” she asks with a shivering whisper. My hands move slowly, starting to roam over every part of her that I’m talking about.

“All of you,” I growl in her ear, kissing her neck. I feel her quickening pulse but I still feel like there’s something else apart from my growing hard-on wedged between us.

“Ethan?” she finally asks, with emotion spilling over into her voice, and I turn her so she can face me in the near-total darkness of her apartment.

“I’ve never…I mean…,” she starts.

But I think I already know. I could sense it the second I saw her.

She’s so perfect. So…pure.

“Never what?” I ask anyway, remembering that everything about her I hear needs to be from her lips from now on.

“I’ve never been with anyone…I’m a virgin, Ethan,” she finally manages to say.

“Still want all of me?” she asks, crimping her lips before I kiss them wide open again.

My hands begin moving over her. My body is hard against hers as she yields to my touch, giving us the only answer we need.

My lucky charm just proved the luckiest of them all.

My Krissy, a virgin!

I really am the luckiest guy alive.

CHAPTER NINE

Krissy

It’s the only thing I’ve never told a living soul.
