She hesitated. “I had a dream about it.”

He couldn’t call her out about a dream, could he? Not considering the dream he’d been having when she woke him up.

They made their way up the stairs to the top of the landing, and without walking any farther into the studio, he was able to see the men. He cursed under his breath. No way in hell were they wilderness photographers. Not that he recognized them from LA, but he’d bet his last dollar that people taking pictures of sea life wouldn’t leave cigarette butts in the sand like the four assholes on the beach appeared to have done. “How the fuck did they know anyone was here? Much less anyone they’d have an interest in?”

“That’s the real question, isn’t it?” Ronnie asked.

“I don’t want to assume they’re looking for me in particular.” Terrence turned from the window, and they walked backdownstairs to the bedroom. “You aren’t exactly an unknown to the gossip rags.”

“True,” Ronnie said and began to make up the bed. “But it’s been quite some time since any of them have printed my picture.”

“I can’t think of a reason for them to have an interest in me all of a sudden. Not unless it’s become a big deal that I take time off every summer.” He closed his eyes briefly, thinking. “Hell, I’m trying to remember the last time they wanted a picture of me. It was probably during the last award season at an after party or something of the sort. Months ago.”

“No reason for them to want me,” Ronnie said. “Not unless it’s awhere is she nowtype of thing.”

An uneasy feeling settled in the pit of his stomach. “Is there any way they could know we’re here together? Because that sure as hell would be a pretty paycheck for someone.”

He could tell by the way she paled at his words that particular scenario hadn’t hit her yet. He was certain the potential headlines flashed through her mind as well.

Together Again!

Terrence and Ronnie’s Love Shack by the Sea!

Five Years of Foreplay?

“No,” she finally said. “There’s no way. We didn’t even know until late yesterday that we’d even be here. In order for them to know, they would have had to have been following us, and I’m certain one of us would have picked up on it.”

“Unless it was Andie or Fulton,” Terrence said.

“Surely, you don’t think…” Her voice trailed off as if she couldn’t force the words out.

“Not normally. No. But why else would those four men be on the beach?”

Ronnie sat down on the edge of the now perfectly made bed. “It’s inconceivable that either of them would do something likethat to us. I think so, and I’ve only known them for a few weeks. You’ve known them for a lot longer. I don’t see how you could imagine them guilty of such betrayal.”

The truth was he didn’t think it possible that either Andie or Fulton would call in a hot tip on their location. Yes, he was aware that people did a lot of bad things for money, but there was no way either of them would use others in such a manner.

“I’m not saying they did it maliciously or anything,” he said. “It could be something as simple as the wrong person overhearing something.” He ran his hand through his hair. “I don’t know. None of this makes sense.”

“Oh my God!”

His head shot up at her exclamation. She stood in the middle of the room, pale and shaking. “Ronnie?”

“What if they were there last night?”

Chapter 21

VERONICA

How could I have been so stupid?

The realization the men outside might have taken pictures of her and Terrence left a bad taste in her throat. It felt similar to the feeling and taste she’d experience right before she threw up. She probably wouldn’t throw up though. Not with the amount of rage pulsing through her veins.

“I’m going to go out there and kick their asses,” she said.

“Ronnie.” Terrence held out a hand. “Sit back down please.”

She slapped his hand away. “No. And after I kick all their asses, I’m going to smash every camera they have.”
