Jake clenched his teeth. He was not going to punch Jamison. He wasn’t not going to punch Jamison. He was not-

“Jake, dinner is warming in the oven,” Eva said, turning back toward Jake. “Please don’t let him have anything more to drink tonight.”

Jake nodded. He didn’t want to look at her. At how pretty she looked next to the resident prissy-pant dork.

“And, Charlie,” Eva said, waiting on her brother to look up at her. “You mind Jake. And clean this mess up before bedtime. Which is nine thirty, by the way.”

“Nine-thirty?” Charlie squealed, bobbing up and down.

“Well, it is the weekend.”

Jake cleared his throat. “You’ll be home by then, won’t you.”

Eva cast a flirty look toward Jamison. “Maybe.”

Jake clenched his fist even harder.

“Okay,” Eva said, grabbing a wrap, “Have fun, boys.”

The two departed with a snick of the door which felt more like a sucker punch.

“Damn it,’ Jake said under his breath.

“That’s a bad word.” Charlie pointed out.

“There’re worse ones, kid. Trust me.” Jake said, looking around the room. “So it’s me and you. What do you want to do?”

“You want to play trucks. You can be Marsh Monster.” He held up a jacked up monster truck.

“Negative.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means try again,” Jake said.

“Um, we can build a tent. Maybe you can do a better one than me.”

Jake considered that. He had a tent at his place, but he didn’t want to load the kid into his truck for something like that. He should know how to entertain boys. After all, his brother Matt had two boys.

Matt.

Jake dug his phone from his pocket and dialed his big brother.

“What’s up, Snake?” Matt asked.

“You with the boys this weekend?”

"Yeah."

"What are y'all doing?"

"We're about to head to the St. George's football game."

"Perfect."

"For what?" Matt asked.

"For me to come with you. I'm watching Charlie for Eva and since he'll be going to school with your boys, maybe it would be cool to hang out."
