Molly laughed out loud. “I am so not fierce!”

“If you say so. Go on, though. I know you have something to say, so you might as well get it over with.”

She laughed. “I’m not going to give you a hard time, if that’s what you’re expecting. I just wanted to say that I’m happy for you. I’m happy that you’ve met Becca, and I’m happy that you’re joining in with everyone again. This is the beginning of you joining in again, isn’t it?”

“It is.”

“Good. We’ve all missed you, you know. I know you had to work a lot after your parents died, but we thought we’d lost you when you lost them.”

Jacob had to swallow. “I think I lost myself.”

Molly nodded and touched his arm. “Yeah, but you’re back now. And Becca’s amazing. She’s just what you need.”

He smiled. “Thanks, Molly.”

“Yeah. Just … don’t be a stranger anymore, okay?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

By the time he reached Becca, she was talking to Slade. They both looked up at him and smiled.

Slade winked at him. “I’m going to get another drink.”

“You don’t need to go,” said Becca.

Slade just grinned at her as he walked away.

Jacob slid his arm around her shoulders. “It’s okay. I didn’t scare him off.”

“I didn’t think you did.”

“Good. It’s not that he’s trying to get away from me. I’d put money on the fact that he’s heading for the drinks table because that’s where Willow is.”

“Oh!” Becca’s eyes grew comically wide – he might have to add more cola to her Cognac. “Are they …?”

“Nobody knows, but I think everyone is hoping.”

“Aww, all your friends are really nice people.”

He grinned. “I think so.”

“Good, because they all want to see more of you. Every single person I’ve spoken to this afternoon has told me how good it is to see you again – and how I need to make sure that you get out more and that we keep seeing them all.”

His smile grew even wider. “And are you up for that?”

She raised her eyebrows. “You want me to be your social secretary?”

“No. I’m asking if you want to organize our social life?”

“Ours?”

“Yes, Becca, ours.” He dropped a kiss on her lips, even though he’d told himself that he wasn’t going to do that until everyone left. He couldn’t help it. “It’s what couples usually do.”

She grinned back at him. “Well, in that case … yes. I wouldn’t mind doing that.” Her smile faded. “I might drive you nuts at first, checking everything with you, making sure that it’s okay.”

“It’ll be okay.”

She laughed. “No. You can’t just go along with whatever I say. You have to let me pester you until I learn. It won’t work if you just humor me. If we’re going to be a couple, I want us to be a real couple.”
