Unknown: You don’t know?

She didn’t tell you! Ha!

That just proves it.

I’m right here in Dodge with her.

Jacob spun around and before he knew what he was doing, he’d put his fist through the plasterboard of the wall. He closed his eyes and shook his hand. It didn’t hurt. Nothing hurt. He was numb. How could Jamie know that she was in Dodge City – unless he was there, too? His blood ran cold - and did that mean that he wasn’t lying about the rest? No! He knew it. Becca just wouldn’t. Any other woman he would doubt, but not Becca.

Unknown: Still don’t believe me?

Jacob: No.

Unknown: You’re such an arrogant bastard.

I thought you might need proof. So I got you some.

Hold on.

Jacob started to pace again. There was no way Jamie had proof of anything. He couldn’t have, because there was nothing to prove. He knew it. No way would Becca have slept with him. She wouldn’t go anywhere near the guy. She wouldn’t have slept with anyone else, she just wouldn’t, that wasn’t who she was. He sucked in a deep breath when he realized that it was possible that Jamie might have been on the flight that took her out there.

His heart sank. But if that was the case, why hadn’t Becca told him?

His phone had gone dark in his hand while he waited for this so-called proof that Jamie was sending. He could hear the blood rushing in his ears when he opened the message.

Unknown: Ready for this?

Jacob waited. Then, his heart sank when he saw the photo that came in.

It was Becca. There was no question about it. And she was … kissing him. Kissing Jamie. The rushing in his ears turned into a roar and he turned and threw his phone against the wall with such force that it smashed into a dozen pieces.

He sank to his knees and held his head in his hands. He stayed there for a long few minutes, trying to process it all. She wouldn’t do that. She loved him. He knew it. And he loved her.

He forced himself back to his feet and went to retrieve the pieces of his phone. He’d have to get a new one in the morning – before he met Trick and Ollie at the plane. He was still going to Kansas.

Becca shook her head in disbelief. “It’s just going to voicemail.” She looked at Callie.

“Maybe he’s already gone to bed?”

Becca checked her watch. “Maybe. But I can’t believe he’d go to bed without saying goodnight to me. It’s not that late there and he usually leaves his phone downstairs – he doesn’t turn it off.”

“Maybe his battery died? You said he’d been traveling today, right?”

“Yeah.” But Jacob didn’t let his battery die – ever. He was too organized and efficient to let that happen. If he’d turned his phone off, it had to mean that he didn’t want to talk to her. She couldn’t think of any other reason. Jamie had sent him that stupid photo and he’d believed it. No! He wouldn’t. He knew her. He loved her. And she loved him.

“I want to go home, Cal.”

“Okay. The boys are back, look. We’ll all walk you out.”

Callie’s brothers looked grim when they came into the back room. “He got away.”

Becca nodded. That didn’t surprise her. Jamie was just that weaselly.

They walked her out to the truck, and she hugged Callie before she got in.

“It’ll all be okay, Becs. I promise. He’ll believe you if he loves you. And if he doesn’t – well, then you’ll know.”
