“No. Well, he put his hand on my leg – that’s all. It was more what he said. He told me that I might as well screw him because after this weekend you were going to think that I had. He said I cost him his gig with Jacobs Estate, and that he was going to cost me mine.”

Jacob blew out a shaky sigh. “I’m going to make sure that he’s out of a job – and he’ll never fly again, if I can help it.”

Becca nodded. “He might have more pressing problems than that. Callie’s brothers went out hunting for him last night. If they get ahold of him, he might never walk again, let alone fly.”

Jacob chuckled. “I know I just said that I don’t believe in violence, but I could make an exception, in his case.”

He tightened his arms around her. “But let’s forget about him now, can we?”

“I’d love to.”

Jacob looked over her shoulder, and Becca did the same, guessing that he was checking if her dad was still there. He wasn’t. She rolled up onto her toes at the same time that he lowered his head. Then, his lips met hers in one of his deep, lingering kisses that left her clinging to him.

When he finally lifted his head, his gray eyes looked down into hers. “I love you, Becca.”

“I love you, too.”

He smiled. “I know. I wish this hadn’t happened, but it’s only shown how strong we are together, how strong our trust is, and our love.”

She nodded happily. “I won’t lie, Jacob. I was scared, but I refused to believe that you didn’t trust me – didn’t love me enough to know that I would never.”

“I know. And I did doubt – but only momentarily.” He shuddered. “That photo.” He pulled himself together. “But I know you, and I love you, and I knew.”

She reached up and pressed another kiss to his lips. “What do you say, want to leave it behind us now and go and meet my parents properly?”

He chuckled. “Yes. Your dad and I are friends already, but I’m looking forward to getting to know your mom.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Jacob looked around the big farmhouse table at Becca’s family. He loved them already. Her dad had been so good to him this morning. He’d come to meet him at the airport. He’d believed – or as he put itknown– that Jacob loved Becca and that he was the one for her. On the way back from the airport, he’d even made a few calls, and they’d made a couple of stops so that Jacob could buy what he needed for this afternoon. Chuck Taylor was a good man, no question about it. Jacob was looking forward to getting to know him better.

Her mom met his gaze across the table and winked. Jacob winked back. She’d been easier to win over than her husband. When she’d pulled him aside earlier, she’d told him that she was only such an easy touch because she knew that her daughter loved him so much – and because he’d proved himself and his love for her by the way he’d reacted to what had happened. He’d even huddled in the pantry with her and Chuck so that he could fill her in on what he wanted to do this afternoon. She’d loved the idea and was an eager accomplice.

Becca’s two older brothers were here, too: Danny, and CJ. Apparently, they were the ones who lived closest, and they’d heard about last night from Callie’s brothers. They’d wanted to come and meet Jacob when they found out that he was here. They hadn’t given him the warmest welcome, but they’d eased up after he’d gone out back with them and had a chat. They’d talked to him man to man about what they expected for their little sister, and he’d been happy to reassure them that he planned to treat her right. He might not have thought of them as his kind of people if he’d met them under any other circumstances, but he liked them, and hoped that they would become his people – in every sense.

“Do you want to take Jacob and show him the gazebo?” Becca’s dad asked her.

Jacob tried not to laugh at the puzzled look on her face when she said, “I don’t know.” She turned to him. “Do you have any interest in seeing the gazebo? Dad and these guys built it a few years back. It’s … nice.”

Jacob nodded eagerly. “I’d love to. I could use a walk after all this great food.”

Her mom laughed, looking pleased.

Danny waved a hand at him. “Careful. If you go flattering her cooking like that, she’ll load you up with all the leftovers to take home with you.”

Becca laughed. “You’re just worried that you won’t get them.”

“Go on.” Chuck pushed his chair back and got to his feet. “You two go take a walk to the gazebo. You’re going to have to leave in a bit and we want to see you before you go.”

Jacob followed Becca to the coat stand by the back door. “Will you guys still be here when we get back?” she asked her brothers.

CJ laughed. “You can bet you ass we will be!”

She gave him a puzzled look, but he just winked at Jacob. “We’re not going anywhere till we see it.”

“See what?” Becca asked.

“Go on!” her mom shooed them to go out the back door before she turned and swatted the back of CJ’s head. “And you, stop flapping your lips and start doing dishes.”
