“Sounds like a plan to me.”

He took her hand and led her toward the bathroom. He hadn’t known what he was expecting tonight, but it wasn’t this – it wasn’t her.

He’d still have to say goodbye to her in the morning, but he already knew that she’d be a memory he would always look back on with a smile.

Chapter Four

Alyssa’s eyes popped open. She’d been in a deep, deep sleep and that wasn’t like her. It took her a moment to gather her wits. When she did, it all came flooding back. Last night … Lee, and … Oh! She was still here! She stiffened when she realized that her arm was curled around his waist. Her leg was tangled between his, and his lips were resting in her hair. His warm breath sent goosebumps racing over her skin when he spoke.

“Good morning.”

She squeezed her eyes tight shut, hoping that she might still be dreaming. She knew that she wasn’t when he ran his hand over her hair and then tucked his fingers under her chin to make her look up at him. Holy smokes! He was still hot – perhaps even hotter with his sleep-tousled hair and sleepy smile.

There was a touch of concern in his eyes as he asked, “Is it not a good morning? Are you going to say anything?”

She had to smile. He was such a good guy. Any doubts she’d had about that when they first came back to his room last night had been dispelled over the course of the evening. She swallowed – over the whole night! They’d made the most of the twelve hours they’d had. That thought made her shoot a glance at the clock on the nightstand. It had better not be twelve hours since they came back here. She was supposed to be meeting her dad and Ria at eight-thirty.

She came back to the present when Lee smiled and pressed a kiss to her lips. “Talk to me?”

“Sorry. I just … It takes me a minute to come around when I first wake up.”

“Want me to make you a coffee to help with that?”

She curled her arm tighter around his waist. She couldn’t help it. Even though she knew she had to get up and leave, she didn’t want to. But even if she didn’t have to go, there was nothing else left for them to do. Their deal had been a one-night-only thing, and now, it was over.

Still, what was the harm in sticking around long enough to have a cup of coffee with him? Last night had to have been the best night of her life so far; it was going to end all too soon. She’d rather it ended with caffeine inside her than with a mad scramble for her clothes and the door.

“Please. I’d like that.”

He brushed her hair away from her face and pressed another kiss to her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck, loving the feel of his warm naked body against hers. Then she laughed; she couldn’t help it.

Lee lifted his head and looked down into her eyes. “You could make a guy paranoid doing that, you know?”

She laughed again. “Sorry. I’m not laughing at you. I’m really not,” she added when she saw the skeptical look on his face. “I’m laughing at myself. I told you that I’ve never done this before. I kind of expected that the morning after would be more … awkward? I’m not laughing at you, and I’m definitely not complaining.” She pressed the length of her body against him, loving the way he felt. “I’m just surprised that we’re like this even now.” Her smile faded. “Now that it’s time to say goodbye.”

Two small lines appeared between his eyebrows, and her heart leaped into her mouth. Perhaps he didn’t want to say goodbye? If he didn’t, she’d be … No. Whatever she might hope for, there was nothing else for them to do except say goodbye.

He kissed her again, more deeply this time, and let his hands rove over her as he did. She was soon making needy little noises again. This was more like it; it wasn’t that he didn’t want to say goodbye to her, it was that he wanted one more time before they did.

When he lifted his head again, his cool blue eyes looked down into hers. “I can’t say that I’ve never done this before, but I can tell you that it’s never been like this before. I … I was thinking … How long are you here for?”

Her arms tightened around him of their own accord. “Just for the weekend. I’m leaving on Sunday afternoon. How about you?”

He nodded slowly. “The same. I … Do you have plans for tonight?”

She held his gaze for a long moment. She’d love to make some plans with him — even if they were only plans to repeat last night. But she didn’t know what her dad and Ria had in mind. She’d hate to say that she could see Lee again only to discover that they wanted her to do something with them.

She must have been quiet too long. Lee nodded and pressed another kiss to her lips. “Sorry, you’re right. I know it was dumb to ask.” He gave her a bright smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “We had a great time, didn’t we? It’d be dumb to try to ask for more.”

To her disappointment, he rolled away from her and got out of bed. She pressed her lips together as she watched his bare butt walk away. Had she seriously just talked her way out of another night with him?

He popped a pod into the coffee maker, then turned back to her with a smile. “I know it’s best that we quit while we’re ahead, but I have to tell you, this was good, Lizzie. Thank you.”

She nodded sadly. He was right, right on all counts. It was good, but it was best if she just drank her coffee and left. At least her walk of shame would only take her a little way down the hall to her own room.

She rolled out of bed and pulled her clothes on. Once she was sitting, Lee came and gave her the first cup of coffee before going back to make his own. When it was ready, he came and sat on the edge of the bed beside her and wrapped his arm around her.

She rested her head against his shoulder and smiled up at him. “I wasn’t lying, you know. I never have done this before, and now I don’t want to do it again.”
