Trent just grinned at them. “I’ll expect an invitation, either way.”

That seems like an odd thing to say, but Alyssa didn’t get the chance to question it as Bentley guided her toward the door and out of there.

When they got back to the estate, Bentley wanted to tell Ollie and Reaves to try and act a bit cooler. Alyssa had to know there was something going on by the way the two of them were grinning like fools.

She gave them a puzzled smile. “Did you two know? Is that why you were acting weird when you dropped me off this morning?”

They both laughed, and Ollie raised an eyebrow at Bentley. He nodded; there was no harm in them telling her now.

Reaves beat him to it. “It was hard not to act weird with your man here on board.”

Alyssa looked from him to Bentley and back again. “Are you serious?”

“Completely serious,” said Ollie with a laugh. “I didn’t think we were going to pull it off.”

“I wouldn’t have thought that there was room for all three of you in the cockpit.”

Ollie laughed again. “There isn’t. Bentley spent the flight locked in the bathroom.”

She burst out laughing and turned to look at Bentley. “Couldn’t you have just told me that you had a meeting in the city this morning?”

“I could. Believe me, these two were full of suggestions. They wanted to come up with anything that meant they didn’t have to conceal me on the flight. But I didn’t want you to be suspicious.”

She laughed. “I hope you know that I’m going to be suspicious of you in the future. I wouldn’t have thought that you were capable of being so sneaky.”

He had to laugh. “I’m not usually.” He met her gaze and held it. “But today’s an exception.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Why do I get the impression that means the surprises aren’t over for today?”

He smiled and took hold of her hand. “Because you’re a smart lady.”

As he drove away from the hangar, he waited for her to question that he’d turned toward the house instead of the offices.

“Did you forget something?” she asked.

“No. Why?”

She laughed. “Was this new contract just a ruse, then? Are we going home instead?”

He brought his SUV to a stop in front of the house. “No. It’s not a ruse. It’s just that … I want us to enter into this contracthere in the house.” His heart was hammering. He felt like she must know exactly what he was talking about.

Apparently, she didn’t. She simply smiled and got out. “Okay, but are we going to go to the offices afterward? I’d like to get to work.”

He smiled to himself as he followed her up the steps, into the house. “We’ll get to that.”

As he led her down the hallway toward his wing of the house, he scowled when he spotted Willow stick her head out of a door. The last thing he wanted was his sister giving it away now.

Alyssa didn’t notice. She kept walking, only pausing when they reached Bentley’s door. He led her inside, and she headed toward the living room. He caught hold of her hand and stopped her outside the office. This was it; the moment was finally here.

“I thought we should do it in here.”

Her eyes widened. “Is it finished?”

He nodded and reached for the door handle. “I hope you’re going to like it.”

He went inside first; it felt wrong to go through a door ahead of her. But he needed to be in the room so that he could see her face when she saw it.
