I look at the cabinet next to the bed. There’s a red button in reach. I know what it does, so I hit it.

Within seconds, a doctor is walking in. I recognize him. “You worked on me in 2018,” I say. “Calvin, right?”

“Good memory, Marco,” he replies, taking a pen out of his white jacket pocket. “How you feeling?”

“Like I got shot.”

“That’ll be because you got shot. You were lucky, though. No major organs took a hit. In and out, and the supplies you had on hand kept you alive until you got here.”

“Where’s here?”

“Rocket Island. Didn’t think you’d want to be back in Chicago at the minute.”

“Who brought me?”

“Anna White. Said she was a friend of yours. You owe her a thank you.”

“Where is she?”

“Bathroom at the minute. Alessandro’s through there if you want to talk to him.”

“How long am I in here for?”

“Until I’m sure you’re not going to split those stitches wide open. No fighting, no stretching. Hell, don’t even jerk off too vigorously for a few weeks. You got lucky, Marco. Seriously.”

He pulls the door open and calls out. “He’s awake.”

Alessandro appears, nodding to Calvin who heads off, shutting the door behind him.

“Can’t get you to stay dead,” Alessandro says. “Despite your best efforts, Calvin managed to keep you on this side of eternity.”

“Fill me in.”

“Theo’s dealt with. Got a cleaner in while you were being choppered out here. Piper’s pissed, but he can’t do much about it. You’ve got some time.”

“How long was I out?”

“About a week. You came to a couple of times, but you weren’t making any sense. Calvin managed to get you back under. You take some sedating, my friend.”

“What about the house?”

“Compromised, but still standing. I’ve left it well guarded in case Piper tries a second hit.”

“I had no choice about Theo.”

“The commission know that. He accepted the contract on you. That made him fair game. You’ve broken no rules.”

“What about Anna?”

He scratches his head. “That’s a funny one. If I were her, I’d have run while you were out cold. She saved your life, staunched the flow of blood, got you up to the house, got Giuseppe to call me. She even rode in the chopper with you out here. She could have left. Theo’s car was right there with the key still in the ignition.”

He crosses to the window and looks out. “Still a beautiful island,” he says, spinning around to face me. “You need to be nicer to her. She thought you were worth saving. God knows why, but she did. Must have seen something in you I can’t.”

I growl. “Just because I’ve been shot doesn’t mean I can’t get out of bed and slap you, Alessandro.”

“Think about this,” he says, walking over to the door. “She could have shot you while you were out. Made sure you were dead. Or left you to die. She didn’t. She saved you. Think about that when you decide what to do with her.”

“Bring her to me.”
