The limo lurches forward, engine revving into the red. I yank the door shut and not a moment too soon. A spiderweb of cracks shatters the glass as more bullets fire straight at us. Then we’re around the corner and out of reach of the rifle.

I look behind me. I’m about to relax when a car appears, racing to catch up. “We’re being tailed,” I say.

“I know,” Alessandro replies. “Hang on.” He yanks the wheel to the left, taking a corner so fast we rise up onto two wheels. A moment later, we crash back down, moving forward at speed. The car behind isn’t gaining, but it’s not falling back.

“Take a right here,” I tell him. “Then hit the brakes.”

He races down an alley. We skid to a halt and I get the door open before the car chasing us knows what’s happening. It takes the turn and is rolling our way too fast to react.

I have time to aim, take a breath, and hold it. I squeeze the trigger of my pistol. The bullet goes straight through the windshield and wipes out the driver.

The car lurches left, slamming into the wall inches from our bumper. I jump back in.” Go,” I say. “Before the cops show up.”

Alessandro tears up the alleyway, horns honking at him as he joins the traffic in the next street. “Slow it down,” I tell him. “Get us to a cut and shut.”

“On it.”

I sit back in my seat, turning to see Anna staring back at me. “You all right?” I ask her.

She throws her arms around me. “You saved us,” she says, kissing my cheek. “Thank you.”

I don’t want to smile, but I can’t resist. “It’s not over yet,” I tell her. “We need to get the hell out of here.”

Alessandro turns into a garage parking lot. The door’s open and he rolls straight inside. It shuts behind us an instant later. Sparks are flying from the cut up jobs around us.

I climb out. Louie comes over, slapping his hand into mine. “Been a while, Marco. Damn shame what happened to your folks.”

“I need a car,” I tell him.

“Got just the thing. Came in last night. New plates and spray. Paint’s not even dry yet.”

“Perfect.”

“I’ll get you the keys. You looking to sell the limo or get it repaired?”

“Hold it for now.”

“Will do. Anything for my number one client.”

I lean into the back of the car. “Come on,” I tell Anna. “We’re switching vehicles.”

She climbs out, slipping a hand into mine, saying nothing.

Alessandro is tapping on his phone. “Got the coordinates for you,” he says. “You got a burner yet?”

“Nope.”

Louie grins. “Got a desk full of them. Try this one.” He walks into his office, pulling out a cellphone from a drawer and tossing it my way. “Your girl needs one?” He brings a second out and hands it to her. “Charged and good to go.”

“Thanks, Louie.”

“No problem. Numbers are on the screen.”

I pass my burner phone to Alessandro. He types the coordinates of the safe house into it. “I’m running out of places to put you,” he says. “Try not to get compromised again.”

“Do your job and we won’t be.”

I take the keys for the new car, opening the door for Anna to climb inside. Once she’s in, I close the door, turning to Alessandro. “Get onto the commission,” I tell him. “There’d better be consequences for Piper for what he did at the funeral.”
