I finish up in the bath, drying my hair with a towel wrapped around me. Makes me think of the last time I was sitting on a bed with a towel around me. The thought makes my heart thud.

I’ll never forget it. My first time. So different from what I was expecting. All the magazine articles I read suggested the first time was crap, painful, or both. With him, it was perfect.

Could I be pregnant already? It’s a possibility we’re yet to discuss. I’m not using birth control. He came inside me. I might already be carrying his child. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel about the idea, but it excites me. That’s the truth of it. I want to be the mother of his child. Of our child.

I make myself a cocoa and then find a sealed toothbrush in the bathroom. Once I’m done in there I climb into bed, settling down and trying to sleep. Not easy in a strange bed. Even harder without him next to me.

Last night was so much better. He was naked beside me the entire night. I felt so safe. It was wonderful.

I drift off at some point.

I sit bolt upright when I hear the front door of the cabin rattle. I glance at the clock on the bedside cabinet. Three in the morning.

A key turns and I know at once that it’s him. I can tell by his breathing. He dumps a few things in the lounge before coming through. “You awake?” he whispers.

“I don’t normally sleep sat up in bed,” I reply.

He slips his clothes off in the dark. “Any problems while I was out?”

“Nope, not one.”

“Good.” He slips into bed beside me, his hand snaking over my back. I shuffle back, nestling against him, feeling his cock digging into me. I think he might be about to try something, but he only kisses my neck and tells me to go back to sleep.

Who am I to disobey?

Iwake up in the next morning to an empty bed. I get a horrible feeling he’s left me again, but then I hear him out in the kitchen.

The smell of bacon cooking rises in the air.

I climb out of bed, grab a dressing gown, and then head out. “What’s this?” I ask, looking at the kitchen table.

“What does it look like?”

“It looks like the suitcase I left in the cab. Where did you find that?”

“Went to get it last night.”

I unzip the suitcase. My clothes are all still inside. I pull some out. They smell clean. “How did you get this back?” I ask.

“Called in a few favors. Want some breakfast?”

“Please.” I close the case. Next to it is a key and my sketchbook. “What did you do?” I ask, picking up the key. “Is this the key to Marie’s apartment?”

“Your apartment now. If you want it. Marie and her boyfriend have vacated the property.”

“Did you… did you kill them?”

He looks shocked. “You don’t think highly of me, do you? Not every incident requires a violent response. I had a word with them, that’s all.”

“So in the few hours you were gone, you managed to get back to the island to get my sketchbook, and into the city to get this key, and to Gibson’s Mill to get my suitcase? What are you, Superman?”

He piles bacon up on a couple of plates. “I have many people who work for me. All I needed to do was collect from them.”
