“I made a spur of the moment decision, all right? I’m not saying what I did was right but it felt right at the time.”

“What about now?”

“I’m glad he’s dead.”

“Even if it means a life in prison?”

“You think I’ll end up in prison?”

“I think you should have left things to me to sort out.”

“Look what happened when I did that.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

She looks upset, tears welling up in her eyes. “You got yourself stabbed. I thought you were dying. He’d already killed Jody. I couldn’t leave it knowing he’d killed you too.”

“So you reacted. Do me a favor.”

“What?”

“Get my approval next time.”

“Your approval? Since when do I need your approval for things?”

“You’re angry, I get it. Your adrenaline is coursing through you. It does that when you first kill someone but it’ll dump soon and you’ll come back down. You’ll see that you need to think things through more.”

“I’m tired of thinking things through. I would have spent my whole life wishing I could sing on stage and never getting around to it if it wasn’t for you. You’ve shown me it’s better to just make a decision. Get things done.”

“Not without planning. I’m not in prison now because I plan my hits. I plan my business. The only reason I didn’t kill Alessandro in the restaurant is because there might have been cameras filming the whole thing. I’d have picked my time, my place, and then taken him out.”

“Or you’d have died and I’d have been left without a sister or a husband.”

“I’m just saying you need to listen to me from now on.”

“Or what?”

I keep my voice in check but only just. “Or you’ll see a side of me you won’t like. You’re worked up and that’s understandable but don’t forget who I am. I’m not Herb Jones, lawn cutting husband in the suburbs. I’m in charge around here. You will do as I say from now on.” The speech has taken it out of me. I slump back against my seat, on the verge of passing out.

“Stop being a grizzled asshole and rest,” she says. “You can yell at me some more when you’ve recovered.”

I glance at her. She’s still got tears in her eyes and she’s looking defiant. That look in any man would piss me off but in her, it just makes me want her more. She’s got more spine than many made men I’ve tortured into giving up their secrets. She’s not afraid of me. She should be but she’s not. I might have given her some confidence but now she’s overflowing with it. Only problem is, that might get the two of us killed.

I must pass out for a while because the next thing I’m sure of is the car stopping and we’re right by the hangar.

There are several cases being loaded onto the plane. “What’s that?” Kelly asks, looking out the window at the cases.

“My bug out kit,” I tell her. “Clothes for the two of us and enough shit to last us until we can come back.”

“You had this planned?”

“Never know when you might need to vanish in a hurry.”

Diego gets me out, helping load me onto the plane, Kelly following behind. He shakes my hand once I’m in my seat. “Take care, boss,” he says. He turns to Kelly and nods. “See you both soon.”

Once he’s out of the plane the engine comes to life. A couple of minutes later, we’re rumbling along the runway, getting up to speed. “Where are we going?” Kelly asks. “You can tell me now, right?”

“Rome’s still warm this time of year,” I reply. “How’s your Italian?”
