“Good, thanks, Kelly. What’s brown and sticky?”

“A stick?”

“Nope, poo.”

“Very good. How’s Dad doing?” I head inside, shutting the door behind me.

“He’s off taking a hike.”

“Dad?” I walk through to the lounge and sit down near the window.

“Said he wanted to try it. Told me he’d be back in a couple of hours. But that’s not why I’m calling. You know you told me to tell you if I heard anything about Alessandro?”

The mention of his name sends me back in time. I’m standing holding the gun, firing it at the son of a bitch’s face, watching his features implode. “What about him?”

“They’ve closed the case. Mentioned it on the news a couple of nights ago but I was waiting for your father to go out to call you.”

“What did they say?”

“No suspects were ever identified but if anyone comes up with any new information, they’ll reopen it. The assumption was some kind of hired assassin. Came in, shot him, and then disappeared without a trace. Is it wrong that I don’t feel sorry for him?”

“It’d be weirder if you did, Mom.”

“At least Jody can rest in peace now.”

“That’s right.” A moment of silence falls between us.

Mom ends it with another question. “How’s the honeymoon going? Valentine’s Day today.”

“I know, Mom.”

“He give you anything this morning?”

I think about first thing. Six o’clock. The sun not even up yet. Him pulling me on top of his cock. Me riding him, bouncing up and down with his hand on my clit, reaching a screaming orgasm just as he spurted up into me, his hands gripping my tits, squeezing them tightly, sweat pouring down my body.

“A sweet little something, that’s all.”

Ricardo appears in the doorway, looking in at me with a furious face. “It’s my Mom,” I mouth to him.

“Hang up,” he tells me.

“Mom, I’ve got to go. I’ll call you back, okay?”

“Oh, okay. Speak to you soon, sweetie.”

I put the phone down. Ricardo has crossed the space between us. “I’ve got to go back to the States,” he says. “You need to stay here.”

“What? Why? What’s happened?”

He looks down at me and there’s a flash of sorrow in his eyes before the anger returns. “Your father’s just been shot.”

I jump to my feet. “What?”

“Don’t panic. He’s still alive. Heading for the hospital now.”

“He can’t have been shot. He’s out hiking.”

“Let me guess. That’s what he told your mother?”
