I duck inside, shutting the door behind me. They both turn and look at me as I come toward them. Leonard’s hooked up to a drip but he doesn’t look like a dying man. He’s talking to his wife. I can see the family resemblance at once. Kelly’s got her mom’s eyes and her dad’s anger. He’s looking at me and he knows who I am. “What are you doing here?” he asks. “Honor, get him out of here.”

She turns to him and frowns. “What are you talking about, Lenny?”

“That’s Ricardo Bianchi. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be in here. Our daughter would still be at home.”

“Hush,” she says, turning to face me. “Forgive my husband, he’s being an ass. I could blame the medication but he’s just an ass.”

I walk over to them, looking out the window into the parking lot downstairs. “If I could get in here without anyone asking any questions, so could Colombo’s people.”

Leonard frowns. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying they might come back to finish the job.” I pull out my phone and send Albert a message.

Get a security team to St. Mary’s. Guard Leonard Fletcher until I contact you again.

With that done, I pocket my phone. “There’ll be a crew of my people here in ten minutes. Don’t tell them you saw me.”

“Why?” Honor asks. “What’s happening here?”

“You’re both in danger.”

“But why? What have we done?”

“I’ve married your daughter.”

“I told you,” Leonard snaps. “This is all your fault. You should have stayed away from her. You’re not good for my daughter.”

I keep my temper under control. Just. “You’re doped up so I’ll let that go but do not disrespect me again. As for your daughter, she is old enough to make her own decisions in life.”

“Forgive him,” Honor says, nudging her husband in the shoulder. “How is Kelly?”

“She’s doing fine.”

“And the baby?”

“All the tests have been good so far.”

“That’s good. I am glad. Why don’t ants get sick?”

“Excuse me?”

“Why don’t ants get sick?”

Leonard rolls his eyes. “She’s making a joke.”

“I don’t know. Why don’t ants get sick?”

“Because they’re full of anty bodies.” She grins up at me and it’s hard to resist laughing.

“You need to understand something,” I say to them both, my voice calm. “Alessandro killed Jody. He stabbed me. Now he’s dead and his father is pissed about it. Took it out on you when you went to see him. He’s likely to send someone here to kill you if he finds out you’ve talked to me. I’ll resolve all of this shortly. After that, we’ll have a talk about the rights and wrongs of everything I’ve done. For now, you need to stay here and be ready to run if the shit hits the fan.”

“Run?” Leonard laughs, waving the tubes sticking out of him. “Does it look like I can run anywhere?”

My phone beeps. I check the message.

Team inbound. ETA - 3.

That’s good. Three minutes until the ward is guarded by my people. I send a reply.
