“Giuseppe will have a wedding suit that will work for a dying man’s figure, I’m sure.”

“You’re the Don. I’m sure he’d come here rather than you needing to travel all the way to Rome for a fitting.”

“Power is not about taking advantage of your situation, my boy. True power is about a gentler touch than that. I travel to him, word gets around that I am a good sort. That makes people more amenable to me when I raise my business concerns. That makes it easier to get my way without resorting to violence. Remember that. Power is not about advantage. It is about leverage.”

“So you trick people.”

He smiles, clapping his hands together. “Now, I think you really could make a Don, my boy. Life is about tricking people. It’s about manipulating them. There are two types of people in this world. Those who take advantage of others and those who are taken advantage of. Your only choice is what type of person you are.”

His grin broadens. “That is why I asked if you love her. Love is irrelevant. What matters is power and leverage. You want to become Don as does your brother. You use that woman to get your goal. You get married to her. You have a child with her. She has no idea you are doing this for your own ends and you do not tell her. Let her believe you love her. I know the truth, Vincenzo. I know you are using her and I am proud of you. That is why I set this challenge for you and Michael. I want to see which of you has the stones to go as far as you must to become the Don.”

He takes a sip of coffee. “Challenges are a part of your life. Pressure. Lies. Manipulation. Violence. Making the right choice is a daily issue in this job. You must be capable of using those around you. It is easiest to use those who care for you. Let her believe you love her. Let her give you a child. When that child is old enough, tell them what I tell you now. People are there to be used. There is no such thing as love. It does not exist. It is a fallacy, a lie, a weakness that befalls other people, not our family. We know there is only power and money.

“If there is any love in our veins, it is for power and money. Prove you are my son. Manipulate her into giving you a child even though you do not love her. Show me you have what it takes. Hell, once the child is born, feel free to tell her what you’ve done. By then it won’t matter how she feels about it. You will have your heir and I can die in peace.”

He leans back in his seat, looking like all the energy has drained from him. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a pack of Marlboro’s. He lights one and inhales deeply. “Power,” he says in a wheeze. “That is all that matters in life. I have told you enough times. The only question is, how far will you go to achieve it? You don’t get to the top without trampling on people. You got the balls to shit on your brother? On this civilian?”

I don’t need to say anything. I already know the answer.

I’ll do whatever it takes to get my own way.

Twenty-Seven

Ophelia

My day starts with a phone call that wakes me up from a particularly filthy dream about Vincenzo. He’s dressed in his immaculate suit, giving some kind of presentation at the front of a corporate boardroom.

I’m sitting at the back, behind the main table that’s filled with other suits. He glances up at me and I flash him, showing that under my professional business skirt, there’s no panties to be found.

His face darkens but he keeps talking so I decide to try something else. I stand up and turn around, bending over to pick a pencil up off the floor, flashing him my ass, pulling the skirt up around my waist.

I turn back and he’s still managing to speak about the last quarter’s profit margin.

Getting even more irritated, I start to strip. I do it slowly, letting each item of clothing drop to the floor behind me. It’s not until I’m completely naked that he stops speaking. He stares at me and the entire room turns to see what he’s looking at.

All eyes are on my naked body. They all look shocked to see me standing here, not wearing a stitch.

That’s when Vincenzo comes storming toward me. He grabs me and pulls me into his lap, sitting with my ass pointing up at him as he starts to spank me. “You must not strip naked in meetings,” he says, his hand slapping down on my ass over and over again. “You wicked, bad, naughty girl.”

I can’t help moaning instead of shrieking, thinking of everyone else watching this as my legs kick up and down in mock protest. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Vincenzo asks, his hand slipping between my legs. “You’re getting wet from this, you dirty girl.”

I say nothing, I only moan again as he slips a finger into me. “I’ll have to teach you a real lesson,” he says. “Come in you without letting you climax.”

He lifts me up and lays me on my back on the boardroom table, all eyes on me. Spreading my legs, he gets two people to hold my ankles in place. More hands grab my wrists and now I can’t move, only watch as Vincenzo pulls out his rock hard cock.

He pushes his cock straight into me and the instant he does, I hear a ringing in my ears. I frown, shaking the sound away. He thrusts all the way in and as he does so, the ringing gets louder, his mouth open like he’s making that noise. I shake my head to get the sound to stop but it grows deafening.

I blink and the boardroom vanishes. I’m in my bed alone in my apartment. The ringing is not coming from Vincenzo. It’s coming from my phone. I grope for it, hating whoever disturbed my dream.

“Is that Ophelia Addams?” the man’s voice on the other end of the line says when I answer.

I try to speak but my mouth is still dry from sleep, my body tingling as the dream tries to keep hold of me. I hold the phone away from my face and cough hideously, like a witch that just swallowed dried newt powder.

“Sorry,” I say, still a little hoarse. “Yes, that’s me. Who is this?”

“This is Kevin Bridges at the Morgan Library. I’ve been asked to check your calendar to see when you’re available.”

“Available for what?”
