“We go out tonight. I guarantee he’ll turn up and he’ll say or do something to make you want to change your mind.”

“You guarantee it?”

“If he doesn’t, I’ll eat my panties.”

“That’s a bold statement.”

She grins at me. “Because I’m right, trust me. I am the Oracle of relationships. I know all.”

“Then why are you single?”

“I’m not anymore. Me and Rocky are officially an item. We did stuff last night. Hot stuff.”

“But you were here. How did you…?”

“Phones have cameras,” she says with a wink. “I showed him mine and he showed me his, if you get what I mean.” She pauses for a brief second. “It was big, by the way.”

“What was? His phone?”

“Very funny. Now, are you going to agree to my plan?”

“All right. We’ll go out tonight. See what happens.”

“I know what’ll happen. He’ll come for you. And guess what?”

“What?”

“Play your cards right and you might come for him as well.”

I smile but I’m thinking how jealous I am of her. She seems to have effortlessly slid into a relationship with Rocky while I’m not even sure what’s going on with Vincenzo. Not a relationship, I know that much. But what is going on?

Like Cathy said, what do I actually want?

I guess my question is, I know I want him. But does he want me?

That leads to another question.

If he does want me, how far is he willing to go to get me?

Thirty

Vincenzo

Iarrive at her apartment with my face still a little swollen. The black eye I was expecting hasn’t come through. The puffiness from the knuckle duster smacking my head is nothing I can’t handle.

My vision was blurred on the flight back but it’s fine now. The worst of the damage is to my own knuckles. They’re badly grazed from the amount of punches I had to land before it was over.

That’s the thing about resolving an issue in the workplace. You always end up covered in blood.

At least it’s dealt with. The operation can get moving again. They know what happens when they fuck up. To have the balls to try and take ten percent of what we were sending through the warehouse and think we wouldn’t notice.

They thought they could take the famiglia for a bunch of mugs. Didn’t think we’d notice. Now there’s one dead and a whole lot of hospital time for the others. Could all have been avoided if they hadn’t listened to Michael.

He encourages this kind of behavior by acting like a jackass wherever he goes. Trying to be their friend, pretending not to see when they rip him off.

Every damned time is the same. He starts a fire and I’ve got to go put it out.

The Beluccis know I’m not to be messed with. There’ll be no talk of breaking the truce now, not after what I did in Milan.
