“No! He kissed me though.”

She clamps her hands over her mouth, letting out a muffled squeal. “You’re shitting me,” she says a moment later. “Come on, he didn’t, did he?”

“He did.”

“What was it like?”

“Good.” I relive it in my head for a moment. “Really good. But there’s more.”

“Don’t tell me you sucked him off while he was driving.”

“No, will you let me talk?”

“All right, I’m just excited for you, that’s all.”

“He told me he can give me twenty-four hours before he goes back to the city but no longer than that.”

“For what?” Her eyebrows rise as she realizes. “Seriously?”

“Yep.”

“What did you say?”

“I didn’t exactly say yes or no so we’re stopping for dinner while we talk about it.”

“But what about Chippewa Falls?”

“Whatever was there, he’d already dug it up. I think he’s got it on him now. Or in his car maybe, whatever it is. I’ll find out while we’re eating.”

“You haven’t asked him what it is yet?”

“Wouldn’t tell me. Told me I’m better off not knowing.”

“Then you’ve got to find out.” She clicks her fingers. “I’ve got it.”

“Got what?”

“He wants a day with you, right?”

“Right.”

“So you do the dirty with him and while he’s sleeping it off, you rifle through his things, find out what he dug up.”

“I never said I’m going to do anything with him.”

“You are, I can tell by the look on your face that you are.”

“You can’t tell.”

“I can. Your cheeks are flushed, your eyes are bulging and I bet you’ve got soaking wet panties ever since he kissed you. Be careful, wet that long can lead to all kinds of infections. Trust me on that.”

“Maisie!”

“What? Am I lying?”

“That’s not the point. The point is that’s not a polite thing to talk about.”

Shouted voices reach us from the other side of the staff door. Someone’s yelling out in the diner.
