“You might not like the answers.”

“Why aren’t you even bothered? How many men have been in your trunk before, Enzo?”

“A few.”

“You don’t know how many?”

“I stopped counting after the first couple of years.”

I lean my head back and groan. “Oh, God. I’m in a car with a murderer. What am I even doing?”

“Getting somewhere safe while I sort all this out.”

“And where might we be going? Mind telling me that?”

“You know anyone who can put you up for a few nights?”

“Everyone I know is back that way. I haven’t got any relatives.”

“You don’t have anyone who could put you up?”

“I was abandoned, remember?”

“I know that but you got no friends outside of town?”

“No, I haven’t. Why’s it my job to find somewhere anyway? You’re the reason we’re running. You killed someone, not me.”

“I’ll put you up at my sister’s place for now. She can take care of you for a couple of days while I fix things. You got your phone on you?”

I realize where my handbag is. “I left it at the diner.”

“You should have brought it.”

“You grabbed me and loaded me into the car. I didn’t get a chance to go back and get it. Blame yourself, not me. What do you need it for anyway?”

“To destroy it.”

“Oh, right, of course. Should have guessed. Any particular reason or just not a fan of Samsung?”

“The cops will find it and if they do the math, they’ll work out we were at the diner together. Witnesses will say they saw a man with a gun go in, and no one saw him come out. It won’t take much work for the sheriff to get a warrant out for my arrest. With that many witnesses, he’ll have no choice but to act. I’ve given him the shot he wanted. Going to have to move quickly on this one.”

“What are you going to do?”

“As I said, I’ll tell you at the motel.”

I close my eyes. “I’m beginning to think I should have told you to get lost when I had the chance.”

“Too late now.”

“I know that. Don’t you think I don’t know that? How was I supposed to know it was going to end like this?”

“I told you. I’m bad news. Shouldn’t have let me get close to you.”

“Thanks, Captain Hindsight. That’s helpful.”

In the distance, lights come into view. “A motel,” he says. “I’ve stayed there before. We’ll get some sleep and get moving in the morning.”

“With a dead body in the trunk? You happy to leave it there?”
