“Glad to know you care.”

“Seriously, don’t die.”

“I might not have a lot of choice in the matter.”

“You always got a choice, Enzo. No matter how bad things look. Remember driving the car into Antonio?”

“I remember.”

“You made the right choice that night. You’ll make the right choice tonight. I know you will.”

“I hope you’re right, sis, I hope you’re right.”

Idon’t realize how tense I am until I see his car outside. All of a sudden, my muscles relax and I feel like a jellyfish. I’ve been on edge ever since he went to Chicago.

Despite his confidence in the plan, I wasn’t so sure. A part of me was certain he’d take the box and the necklace back and I’d never see him again.

Lying to the Don is a big risk. I don’t know the guy and I know that. But if anyone can pull it off, it’s the man walking up to my front door right now.

I pull it open before he gets a chance to knock. “Did it work?” I ask as I hug him.

“I’m still alive, aren’t I?”

“He fell for it?”

“The entire thing.”

“So Imelda’s safe?”

“She is back home with Sarah and all’s good there.”

“Good, I’m so glad, I can’t begin to tell you.”

“I know.”

We sit together on the sofa. He puts an arm around me. “It’s weird,” I say as I look up at him.

“What is?”

“Last time I was sat here, Maisie was commiserating me on a blind date that went badly. We had ice cream and tequila and now look at me. I’ve brought a man back to my place. Feels kind of scandalous. You know, in the olden days, I’d have been drummed out of the village for this.”

“Scarlet letter on your chest, right?”

“You’ve read it?”

“Don’t need to sound so surprised.”

“I’m not. It’s just… I didn’t think you read.”

“Lots you don’t know about me.”

“Like what?”
