I slide into the seat across from him, pushing the laptop shut.

“Hey,” he says, glaring up at me. “Not cool man. I was on track for full achievements there.”

“Am I supposed to know what that means?”

“It means you ruined two hours of quality me time, is what it means. How did it go?”

“Took a while, but he cracked in the end.”

“Don’t they always?”

“What did you find?”

“Can we just take a minute to praise my skills on this one? Have you any idea how difficult it is to create a handheld scanner that fits inside a jacket without being noticed? Not just that, but one that can pick out the contents of an individual safe deposit box and run post analysis to confirm the results beyond any doubt? You don’t get that at Staples, I’ll tell you that. Only with me.”

“Get to the point.”

“There’s paperwork and a memory card in the box. Little figurine too, looks like the Madonna.”

“That’s it?”

“Hey, I can’t read the fucking memory card. This isn’t some shitty spy movie. This is real life, Jack.”

“Did you do what I asked?”

“Your box is prepped, ready for Monday. One turn of the key and you’re good.”

“Why are you grinning at me like that?”

He glances around him, leaning toward me while lowering his voice. “I found out what’s on the memory card.”

“I thought you just said you couldn’t read it.”

“I can’t, but I found out who put it in there.”

“Who?”

“Executor of the estate was ordered to put the Will in there by her father before he died. To be read by her when he died. Also ordered to send her a text message saying “He’s coming for you,” at a set time and date.”

“Why wasn’t she told this?”

“Because the executor jumped off a building before he could come to my meeting.”

“Jumped off a building?”

“Or was pushed. This shit is getting pretty murky, Jack. First Trevor, now Deputy Reece. You sure she’s worth the trouble?”

“You do your job and I’ll do mine. I promised Vincenzo she’d be dead by tomorrow night.”

“Then you better get moving.”

I write on a napkin, sliding it across to him. “Everyone on that list.”

The napkin’s in his pocket already, like it was never there. “Want a burger?”

“I’m good. Enjoy your regression session.”

“Hey, you should try it sometime.” He lifts the laptop open. “Autosaved. Guess we both got lucky.”
