“Train him for what?”

“To become a hitman.”

“You get training in that?”

“Whole world of pain he had to go through. Still, he tried to leave when he saw what the job really entailed.”

“I’m guessing the money kept him in.”

“He had no choice.”

“You sound like him. Everyone has a choice.”

“Not after they took Isobel.”

“Who?”

“He didn’t tell you about Isobel?”

“Who’s Isobel?”

“Shit, if he didn’t tell you, I’m not sure I should talk about her.”

“Don’t do this, Morgan. Who’s Isobel? His wife?”

“Jack never married.”

“Who is she then?”

He takes a sip of his coffee like he’s deciding whether to shut this conversation down.

“Please,” I say. “His daughter is through there. I have to know. Is he married?”

“Isobel’s his niece.”

“Oh.”

“When he tried to leave the program, they killed Isobel’s parents, took her captive to keep Jack in line.”

“Oh my God.”

“Yeah. Offered to sell her back to him if he could raise two million dollars. He’s been saving every cent he’s made since he started work and he was almost there when he lost it all while recovering from the last job.”

“Seriously?”

“It was in cash and someone burned it. I’m guessing the same someone who ordered the hit on you. That hit was worth two mil. He’d have made enough to get Isobel back if he killed you. Couldn’t bring her parents back to life but at least she’d be free.”

What was it he said to me? All you can do is make the best decision you can with the information you have. That hits home with new force. Now I realize why he’s doing this.

“It was my uncle who had Isobel’s parents killed, wasn’t it?”

“He was head of the board at the organization at the time. He made it happen even if he didn’t pull the trigger himself. Jack’s been waiting for a reason to get him back for a very long time.”

“How do you know all this?”

“He doesn’t think I remember, but I do. He got drunk about six months back, told me everything. Next morning he said nothing, and neither did I but I remember. Wouldn’t be telling you if he was planning on coming back.”

“He told you he’s going, then?”
