Reaching the lagoon, we caught onto the spinning portal that was already open and waiting for those who’d be returning to Faerie with Malika and the other royals including the Queen, aka Milo’s mother.

I silently observed as we made our way there, my hand still in Milo’s grasp as we reached the platform where a guard was encouraging a fleet of warriors to enter the portal with brief instructions as to what they should do upon their arrival.

The closer we got, the tighter my grip was on Milo’s arm, to the point that I wondered if I’d pierce through the armor and strangle the poor limb. There was just something telling me he needed to remain here. I couldn’t grasp it just yet, but my gut never proved me wrong.

But I can’t be selfish…this has to be done. It’s important to him.

“What’s important to who?”

I was thankful we came to a stop, or else I wouldn’t be able to cover my surprise about Amos’s voice in my head.

“Amos? I didn’t speak that into the pack bond.”

“I know you didn’t,”he calmly answered. He sounded as if he was casually observing something, or at least, that was the impression I had in my mind from the tone of his voice.“You directed it to me.”

I did? Oh…fuck, sorry. I’m just…

“Nervous,”he stated like it was a fact.“What are your instincts telling you?”

That Milo shouldn’t return to Faerie. Not yet…I think. There’s just something…odd in the air. I don’t know. I’ve been nervous since we arrived here.

“Stay put. I’ll be there in a moment,”he assured me, which was unexpected.

Wait, Amos. You don’t need to come here.

He didn’t reply, which made me bite my bottom lip because I didn’t want to be more of a bother.

“What’s wrong?” Milo decided to ask, and I looked over to see he was observing me carefully. “I know you’re nervous, but your heartbeat has only been increasing with each step we’ve taken to the portal.”

“I feel selfish if I share,” I whispered in hopes the Queen wouldn’t overhear our conversation. “The air is off. Like…I haven’t felt this nervous in a long time, Milo. Something just doesn’t seem right about you going back, but I can’t pinpoint it, nor do I want to delay you from accomplishing your duty.”

He stared into my eyes for a long moment, just as one of the guards announced their departure.

“Prepare to enter the portal!”

“Pause the departure,” Milo declared and my eyes widened at his words.

I practically shook him while hissing, “What you mean pause it?!”

“If you don’t feel comfortable with me going, there’s a meaning for it,” he replied. “Did you request anyone from our pack to come over?”

“Well, I wasn’t going to but I think my mental thought reached Amos and he insisted he’d be here in a moment,” I explained.

“What’s the meaning of the stalling?” Queen Moremi demanded just as we caught onto footsteps that had all of us glancing to the left.

“Princess Phoenix deems your journey to Faerie unsafe.” Amos revealed himself from the shadows of the forest, his hands up so no one would fire at him seeing as the remaining guards had their spears and golden guns up with the intention of shooting.

“King Clementine,” Queen Moremi announced as her eyes narrowed. “You are interfering with royal protocol.”

“My apologies, Queen. That is sadly not my intention,” he confessed and bowed his head slightly. “However, my mate is never wrong with her gut instincts, which is why it would be best to wait a few short minutes until we can confirm journeying to the Faerie is a wise idea.”

“And why wouldn’t it be?” she asked as she glanced over at me. “Last time I checked, Elphaba hasn’t made me aware that her daughter has Seer abilities.”

“I…” I didn’t know how to defend myself in this case, but Milo simply let go of my arm, only to grab my hand firmly as he stood almost protectively before me.

“Mother, you’re intimidating her,” he stressed. “Willow has never been wrong with her instincts like Amos stated. She’s been wary of our departure since we arrived here, but has stayed silent all this while for she understands our traditions and did not want to interfere or be deemed selfish for her concerns. We as Fae, especially Dark Fae, should know not to ignore warnings unless we’re willing to endure the consequences.”

That made many guards exchange looks as Milo sighed.
