That name was strong, the image of him as clear as day. I immediately wanted to submit to her demands as I watched her shake her head.

“I won’t hurt them if you give me back what you took from me.”

That was the problem. I couldn’t remember what I’d possibly taken from her.

I feared her.

She was the definition of evil. I had no capability of stealing from the likes of her. She was too powerful.

Untouchable for a child like me…

"Does Loki ring a bell?” she pondered sweetly even though the sound was nothing close to igniting excitement or joy. “He’s mine, Willow. You have to give him back to me.”

I looked around, hoping this Loki individual would pop out of nowhere and explain to me what was going on, but my stomach flipped in concern. As if the idea of him being given to this woman was far worse than the punishment she could deliver to me in return.

“You’re going to risk everything for one little boy, Willow?” The question was heavy with judgment. “All your family and friends for him? To protect him when he doesn’t know who you are?”

That was the thing. I wasn’t sure if this boy knew me or not, but his name rang a bell like the rest of the names given to me. Not as strongly as Onyx, Papa Dearest, or Viktor, but they all felt important to me in some way.

This Loki person had a connection to me, but I didn’t know how to figure it out.

Will it be worth the pain she’ll deliver to protect all of them?

Oddly enough, it felt like it was, which was why I further tightened my arms around my pulled knees, ready to face the agonizing pain that would do everything it could to destroy me.

“You greedy bitch,” she snarled, and she grew taller and taller while my body simply shrank further. The walls rose higher, the shadows growing more tainted by the second, and the chill that swarmed around me had every intention of swallowing me whole.

“GIVE HIM TO ME!” she shrieked.

I was tempted to close my eyes as she darted downward to attack me, but I couldn’t pull my gaze away—couldn’t cower in fear that she’d get what she wanted.

Small arms wrapped around me suddenly, and I was enclosed in a blanket of warmth as a gentle voice spoke with authority.

“You have no right to bother my princess.”The voice belonged to a little boy.

It encouraged me to peek to the side to see the individual in golden robes. I couldn’t see anything else, which made my heart skip a few beats as I pondered if this boy was a ghost or a monster.

Despite his appearance, I felt safe in his hold as he held me a bit tighter so his warmth would keep me from shaking uncontrollably.

“Do NOT interfere, fae! Or there’ll be consequences!”

“The true consequence is coming to your very doorstep,”the boy vowed.“Our princess belongs to the Forbidden. Remember that next time when you dive into her nightmares.”

“SHE’S MINE TO CONTROL! SHE WILL OBEY AND RETURN WHAT’S MINE!”

I feared the worst as I tried to squirm out of the boy’s hold so I could shield him from her wrath, but he wouldn’t allow me as he hugged me as tightly as he could. It felt like he feared nothing.

“Princess?”

He had my attention for that sole moment, and I met the dark hollows of his face but caught onto his eyes that came into view thanks to the golden sparks that revealed such mesmerizing orbs.

Fascinating beyond words, I was left speechless but felt a sudden weight of calm rush through me. I not only knew this boy, I understood that he was here to help me. I didn’t need to see the color of his flesh or the rest of his physical features to have faith in him.

He really was here to lead me to salvation.

“You’re safe with me, Princess,”he vowed.“Just relax and wake up. All will be well.”

It was so easy to obey him, and I didn’t fear the consequences of my actions.
