Chapter Six

Adreax

For the first few days on the strange planet, Herod stewed in his anger, but he worked beside me, nevertheless. Eventually, we got our ship unstuck and took stock of the damage. Overall, it wasn’t so bad, but we were still faced with a problem. There simply weren’t any materials on this giant ball of rock with which to repair the damage. We had few options at our disposal, and Herod was giving me a lot of pushback about the most promising one.

“You don’t have to come with me, but I am going over there,” I stated flatly.

Herod shrugged, his voice full of resignation as he said, “Do what you will, Adreax. You know I can’t stop you.”

“If you have a better idea, I’d be happy to hear it. Until then, I’m going to see what tools they have aboard their ship.”

“I’m sure that’s all you’ll be doing,” he snorted.

I growled in disgust. So, what? I’d made the woman blush a little, and now Herod was acting like a jealous female catching his mate in an affair. It was truly beneath him, but he refused to see reason. So I’d handle things on my own. He could stay here and pout all he wanted. I had guns to deliver, and I meant to get the job done, with or without him.

“Hello,” the man called Alec greeted me as I approached the camp. He didn’t look all too pleased to see me.

“Hello, Alec,” I said, walking toward him and extending my hand for a friendly shake as I had seen other humans do.

He looked down at my hand with a mixture of disgust and distrust, but slowly extended his own.

“Is there something we can help you with?”

I looked around the camp, curious as to the female’s whereabouts. Alec cleared his throat loudly, drawing my attention back to him.

“Um, yes. Maybe. As you know, our ship is in rather dire straits. I was wondering if you might have some tools we could borrow? I’m afraid we didn’t equip ourselves for making repairs on a planet that doesn’t have access to these things.”

“Seems like poor planning, doesn’t it?” Alec quipped with obvious skepticism.

“If not, I will take my leave,” I said, glancing around the camp once more. “I do not wish to disrupt your work. You look busy.”

“Adreax?” Tayla’s soft voice came to me, and I spotted her trudging up the hill toward us.

“Tayla. Nice to see you again. I was just asking your friend if you might have any tools for making repairs to our ship. We really need to be on our way.”

“I don’t know,” she answered. “I’m sure they sent us with some kind of tool kit, or something, but I don’t know where it is or what is in it.”

She looked like she was about to say something else, but then she stopped herself, and I found the three of us standing in an awkward group. Tayla and Alec stood side by side, and if I wasn’t mistaken, Alec had actually shuffled a little closer to Tayla, as if he was trying to block my view of their ship with his shoulders.

“Ah, well, I suppose it was a long shot, anyway.” I peered past them at the tables full of equipment under the canopy. “What do you have going on over there?”

Using my size, I stepped forward, towering over Alec until he stepped aside, and I headed straight for the tables. I began taking inventory of everything laid out there. The humans may not have had any tools to offer, but I was sure I could find something useful among this junk.
