Tayla’s voice was stern, and I didn’t have to turn around to know that she was walking a thin line between hurt and anger at the moment.

“We need a battery, Tayla.”

It was the only thing I could think to say. It was the truth, and somehow that mattered. I ducked back out of the closet and turned to face her, still on my knees.

“And you thought you ought to steal one?” she snarled down at me, her eyes flashing with anger even in the darkness.

“I was going to ask—”

“Haven’t you caused enough problems for me? Now you’re stealing from me, too? I knew I could never trust someone like you. Irresponsible, manipulative… you just do whatever the hell you want with no regard for anyone else!”

I sat back on my heels, floored by her accusations. This wasn’t about the battery. At least, not anymore.

“Find your battery somewhere else. Leave me alone.”

She stormed off, and I heard her cabin door close somewhere down the hall. She didn’t even wait to see if I left. Perhaps she still expected me to take the battery. I looked regretfully down the hall. I needed it. I didn’t have another option.

Afraid that she might come back, I reached in, quickly yanked the last set of wires free, and then scooped the heavy battery up under one arm. I rushed outside and hurried past Herod without even pausing.

“Come on. We have to go.”
