"Have you heard from Adreax or Herod?"

It was a silly question. Neither of us had any time to sit down at a radio and make contact. We had been flying blindly down here, but there appeared to be a lull in the gunfire overhead. It had to mean something.

"Let's go," he said at length.

He brought me into a small room with a communications bank and handed me a headset. He pulled his own over his head and dialed in the call.

"Nikathy! Are you all right?" a shaky voice called through the static.

"We're okay. How's it going up there?"

Another voice joined the call. "We've scored a few good hits. The Patrol has pulled back."

I started to say something, but was promptly cut off as the man continued speaking.

"Don't go celebrating just yet. I think they're regrouping. They're keeping a close eye on us, and they still have enough of a fleet to make a solid offensive run if they catch us sleeping."

"Let's hope they take a good long time to regroup," Nikathy muttered. "We could all use some rest."

"Don't worry, we'll keep them busy while you get your beauty sleep," one man called back, and there was a round of laughter in my headset. Even I couldn't help but smile at the way the men teased him.

Nikathy ended the call and sat back in his seat, looking as exhausted as I felt.

"How long do you think we have?" I ventured.

"I don't know. Nobody knows. But I don't think we should waste it."

He rose and came over to me, taking my hands in his. He pulled me upright, so that I was standing with my legs spread awkwardly apart for balance, but my weight was in his arms. I gazed up into his eyes, captivated by the way his jaw flexed as he drew deep inhales and let them go.

All at once, I felt myself falling into him, unable to hold my balance any longer on my weakened knees. He caught me, wrapping me up in his arms and laughing lightly.

"Come. Let's get some rest, while we can. I'll take you to your room."
