I didn’t know what else to say. Our conversation trailed off painfully.

“What about yourself? You just woke up one day and decided you wanted to blow stuff up?”

“Not exactly. Let’s just say my dad and I weren’t close either, and I thought I could get his attention by doing something outlandish. Turns out, I’m really good at this job, but he still wasn’t impressed. Every holiday I had to hear about how there were more ‘suitable jobs’ for women.”

“And then?” Nikathy urged.

“And then I was abducted by aliens!” I said with a laugh.

He gave a tense laugh, too, but I could tell that something had changed between us.

The vehicle pulled into a large annex and Nikathy stepped out to use some kind of keycard to get through the gate. The vehicle proceeded through and he locked up behind us, making sure that no one else was near. Fortunately, the streets had remained mostly empty since the attacks had begun. Most of the people appeared to be staying in the shelters and avoiding wide open spaces. That was good for both of us.

He directed me around to a sliding door that would have been large enough to pull Tayla and Adreax's ship into, but he only opened it wide enough for the little vehicle to slip inside before he rolled it back again. It all seemed unnecessary to me, but he ignored my irritation and walked between long rows of metal racks, muttering to himself.

I looked around, and the range of weaponry astonished me. I pulled the transport through the cavernous aisles as slowly as I could manage. I was mildly incensed Nikathy hadn't bothered to mention any of this sooner. There were weapons here that I had never even conceived of. And yet, he was barely paying any attention at all as we meandered along.

"Here! Will this work?" he asked pointing up through the window.

I followed his finger to two mid-range weapons on a shelf. I considered him, still taking in my surroundings, and said, "I was thinking something more like...that."

He turned to see what I was pointing at and unleashed a guffaw that echoed in the enormous space. "Go big or go home, I guess."

I turned to him with a serious expression. "There's no sense holding back."

"You're right. Pull up so I can load it."

The enormous cannon was so heavy it required the use of a lift to bring it down from the shelf, and it wouldn’t exactly fit into the small vehicle we had been driving. Luckily, a large truck sat in the back of the annex and Nikathy got it started with his keycard. Soon, he was in the driver's seat, navigating us toward the top of a mountain peak, just as the sun peaked overhead and began its long descent.
