Damn.

I’m not here for that. I just want to see with my own eyes that she’s okay. Nothing more.

I take another swig and swallow it down. Meanwhile, Seth has finished his bottle. He heads into the kitchen after checking if I need a refill. I call after him, “How long have you two been living together?”

With his head in the refrigerator, his words float to me on arctic air. “Pretty much after my bastard cousin left her at the altar.”

Itakeasipof beer and force my body to relax. It proves harder than it sounds, as I have an overpowering urge to find her ex-fiancé and smash my fists into his face.

“Yeah, that was tragic,” I say, acting like I know everything there was to know about Sin’s getting dumped at the altar. I don’t want Seth to know Sin hasn’t filled me in on her past. I think that bit of knowledge would put me in his dumb-ass category straight away.

“Yeah, it was,” Seth says, leaning against the wall. “Took her a while to get over it, but I think she’s doing all right now.” He takes a swig from his bottle and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. Standing up from his slouch, he directs his gaze at me. “She’s made a good life in Austin, you know. Made a few friends. Be a shame if someone would undo all her efforts.”

I bristle, even though I understand where he is coming from. I don’t know where Sin and I stand at this point. Whether we are boss/employee, friend/foe or soon to be lovers.

Regardless, that’s my business and not his.

“Do you question every guy that comes over like this?”

I expect my question to shame him into silence, but he snaps back right away. “Only the ones that want to get into her pants.”

I don’t like Seth’s questions, not directed at me anyway. For some other guy… hell, I approve. Still, I admire his directness. I like that he’s being a dick to get his answers because it means I can be one, too.

And I don’t shy away from doing so. “How many men have you had this talk with?”

Seth gives me a sideways grin that looks more wolf than lamb. “So far… just you.”

I’m both shocked and pleased. Shocked because Sin is… well, she’ssin. Banging body, gorgeous face, and the fact that she doesn’t give two fucks should have most men knocking at her door to get a taste.

And I’m pleased because apparently, she hasn’t let them.

“Hey… um, you.”

I turn to see a sight that makes me ache.

Her damp hair hangs in a thick braid over her shoulder. Soft tendrils frame her slightly tanned face. Her purple leggings are tight, showcasing that ass I’d missed so much. And I love how her neon green t-shirt stretches over her fuck me tits…

Damn.

I should go.

I can’t though. She holds me with the secret smile she’d given me that night, the one I’ve thought about a thousand times since. The one I see in pink sunsets, the dawn of a new day, and full moons with starry skies…

Hell, I guess if Gramps snatched the CEO position from me, I could earn a living spouting off poetry or some shit.

Setting my mouth into a thin line at the idea, I lift the plastic bag from off the floor. “I brought chicken soup. Do you want some?”

As Seth leaves to get ready for his date and Sin putters around in the kitchen, I sit on the couch, watching some nonsense on TV. Sin told me to make myself at home while she warms up the soup and the lasagna she’d made. I offered to help. She wouldn’t hear of it. Other than me asking if she was okay, she didn’t seem in the mood to talk about her accident.

The smell of basil and garlic wafts from the oven, and the aroma makes my stomach growl. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. Sin’s food smells so good, I plan to have three servings.

And I’ll see aboutdessertif (or when) she offers it.
