The doctor continues, and I push aside my thoughts to concentrate on what he is saying.

“I’ve already emailed her a regiment she needs to follow.” He makes a sweeping gesture with his hand as he relays his list. “Ice packs, heating pads, and the like… having her sleep as much as possible will help the inflamed area heal. She also needs to conserve her voice.”

The knowledge that she will eventually get better goes a long way to making me feel less like a monster. “Thank you, Dr. Samuels. I appreciate you coming to see her, especially on a Saturday.”

“No worries, young man. Just try to be less… ah, enthusiastic next time.” He chuckles as he heads for the door. When it closes behind him, I concentrate on nothing but gathering the items Genesis needs to get better.

I enter the bedroom the moment I hang up from the pharmacy. Sin’s eyes are closed. Her still damp hair is spread out over the pillow, and her pink rosebud lips part as she breathes smooth and even. She looks like a princess waiting for true love’s first kiss.

I sit on the bed beside her, touching her forehead and smoothing her hair. Gramps had done that a couple of times to me when I was in the hospital. I remember how soothing it felt.

Not disturbing her rest is all the comfort I can offer right now. But when she wakes, I’ll give her that and a lot more.

Anything she wants, even my damn heart, if only she will forgive me.

Chapter Eleven

Stranger at the Lake

Genesis

Thispastweekhasflown by. I can’t believe Royce has stayed by my side for the duration of it. I told him when I woke up on that Sunday after I injured my shoulder that it felt a lot better. He insisted I not go to work for a week. Instead, I should stay at the hotel with him just so he could cater to my every need.

After a slight token of hesitation, I agreed.

And I’m so glad I did.

He’s put ice packs and heating pads on my shoulder. He’s helped me type out instructions and memos to my team. He’s even fed me a couple of times.

I laughed my head off the first time he made choo-choo noises like a train as he spoon-fed me some soup.

The icing on the cake was the masseur who came to the room every other day to work on my shoulder.

Sheer bliss. I’ve never been so spoiled.

Yet, there has been a dark cloud that moves in from time to time, blocking the sunlight of my happiness. Royce is hiding something. I’m sure of it. Sometimes he stares at me, which normally I wouldn’t mind, but it’s not a lustful stare. No. Not at all.

It’s sad.

Anxious, even.

At first, I worried he felt guilty about my injury. I hastened to assure him no one was at fault. Least of all him. That seemed to cheer him up… for a while.

His dark musings grew worse when Natalie and Seth came by the hotel a few days later, worry written all over their faces. Royce had gone into the other room to work while we talked, giving us privacy.

Looking them in the eyes, I risked my voice to tell them Royce and I had gotten carried away.

I then let them draw their own conclusion.

Seems they came up with the right ones as they were all smiles after that.

“Can you set up my tripod…over there by the bench?” I ask Royce, fluttering my eyelashes like a helpless damsel.

With my shoulder completely healed and my voice back, I can do anything, even carry my bag and get my tripod together. But where is the fun in that? I’d rather watch how his muscles move under his dark green t-shirt and his leg hugging workout shorts.

All we’ve done for the past week is hold each other and kiss. He point-blank refused to do more, saying I needed to heal.

Well, today is proof that I’m all better and before he leaves for New York tonight, we are going to fuck… one way or the other.
