I sunk deeper into the pillow.

“If we leave now, what are the chances he’ll take a break from saving his family every now and then to grab a cup of coffee with you. Whatever was beginning to spark between you two will fizzle out, and then you’ll be left with a pile of money that makes you feel dirty—surrounded by a life gifted from a guy that became a what-could-have-been.” Sienna rubbed my shoulder. “So, how did I do?”

“Uncanny,” I croaked. “Did you keep your mind-reading abilities from me?”

“It tends to freak people out.”

I almost smiled. “Sounds small and petty when it’s laid out.”

“It’s none of those things, sis. Why would you say that?”

Pushing myself up, I dropped against the headboard. “Because that was a story of ego, pride, and silly-little-girl crushes. You know what Lyla said to me?”

“Something poisonous and untrue.”

“She said I ended up exactly where I was supposed to be—in the gutter. A version of what people told me my whole life. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The only way you’ll ever make money is on your back. Your kind doesn’t belong here. You’re just another pretty little fool who got herself knocked up.

“Everyone underestimates me, but for some reason, Sunny looks at me... and sees something else. I saved his life, he saved me from Luca. We’re even. Taking money from him now would be pity—plain and simple. I don’t want to be the woman he feels sorry for. I want to be...”

“His angel?”

I was glad she couldn’t see my embarrassed face in the dark.

“It feels right here, doesn’t it?” Sienna snuggled into my side. “It’s okay, I feel it too. This is where we’re supposed to be, Kenzie. I feel it. I see it. Sunny’s family comes out on the other side of this, but they won’t do it without you.”

“What makes me so important to their future?”

“Because the valet was killed. They don’t know who they’re fighting, and they can’t trust the people they thought were on their side. No one who’s alone and surrounded by enemies has much of a future.”

The truth of that settled in my bones. “Do you think we can help them find this guy?”

“Yes, because he’s already made mistakes.” Sienna flicked on the lamp and said it to my face. “Here’s what you’re thinking but refuse to say out loud. All those visions I had of you dying and in danger, I finally know why.

“What if we don’t need to search for the killer because you looked in his eyes... and he looked into yours. The man who threw Sunny off the overpass is likely behind all of this. If he killed the valet for knowing too much about him, how unsafe did the streets of Cinco just become for you, for me, for Laurel?”

Rage burned my gut at the idea my daughter would cross that beast’s mind.

“We have our own reasons for finding and stopping this guy, and we’ve got a much better chance doing it together.” She patted my knee. “So you better get Liam Hunt to look at you and see what Sunny sees, because if I have one more dream about my sister dying, I’m going out there and hunting this guy down myself. I’ll take down Digger’s ass while I’m at it.”

The worst part was, she wasn’t joking.

Chapter Five

Sole and Liam fought it out for a full week. I knew because Sunny disappeared every morning after breakfast and came back before lunch pissed. He couldn’t leave the Fairfield on account of being dead, so two guesses where he was and who was making him angry.

Despite Sienna’s reasons— Or were they my reason since she plucked them out of my head? Either way, despite the valid reasons for us to stay and help them find this monster, I stayed out of it and holed up in my room with a sewing machine. The brothers would work it out.

“Gorgeous.”

“You know, Kenzie’s not that hard a name.” I snipped off a stray thread. “Two syllables just like gorgeous. Why don’t you give it a try?”

“Beautiful,” Sunny corrected.

See? This is why I didn’t need to intervene. Sunny was as stubborn as they came. He’d wear Liam down.

“Adjourn with me to the bedroom, please.”

“What’s happening in your bedroom?” I asked his back. He left, expecting me to follow.

I set down Sienna’s new half-finished dress and padded across the hall.

“Kenzie?” Shonda stopped me at his door. “What do you think for dinner? Roast lamb or pumpkin gnocchi?”

“Gnocchi sounds delicious. Let me know if I can help.” It’s wild how comfortable I’d gotten in Sunny’s home in such a short time. Shonda, the girls, Sienna, and I had taken up to chilling on the couch and catching a movie while we ate dessert. Most nights Sunny joined us. Other nights, he tempted me into the hot tub to trade massages.
