He shrugs. “Just did some research after Caleb and Whit. Was fascinating stuff.”

I lean back in my seat and then rub a hand over my face. “I dunno, Luke. Maybe I’m bi. Maybe it’s just Maggie. It’s too fucking much to think about right now. My head is all twisted.”

“Well, you moved out here, five miles from his place,” Luke says and then smirks at me. “Whatever it is, it looks to me like you’ve got a little crush. On a tiny little dude. I guess you don’t need to label it right now. Just let me know if you do.”

“Yeah, man. I dunno. I just moved out here because it’s closer to work. You know this.”

“You’ve never lived close to work.”

“I do now.”

Luke eyeballs me and then smirks at me. “Goddammit. You’ve totally fucked him, haven’t you?”

My face burns so hotly it hurts. “Shut the hell up.”

He smacks the table loudly and then guffaws. “You sure fucking did, asshole! You can’t lie to me. We might not have shared a womb, but I can read you like a book!”

My face is aching, and I rub at my jaw. “You don’t know a fucking thing.”

“I know when you’re lying.” He leans forward, his blue eyes meeting mine. “What was it like? How does it compare to pussy?”

I clench my jaw and turn away. “I’m not telling you shit.”

Luke launches up and grabs onto the back of my neck, pulling me toward him. I struggle under his strength as he laughs wildly and ruffles my hair.

“First Caleb and now you! Shit. What’s going on around here? Is there something in the drinking water? Am I next?”

“That’s not how it works,” I grunt and finally pry his hands off of me. I plop down onto my seat and stare at my annoying brother with narrowed eyes. Both of our chests are heaving, and I bite back a smile. I will not let him think this is a fucking joke. I think I’m going insane. It’s not fucking funny.

“Alright, man. You tell me when you come to terms with your sexuality, yeah? You know we’re cool with it. Ma is like, beside herself with Caleb and Whit’s wedding. Never seen her so happy.”

“I know.”

“And Mag seems cool.” I send him a glower, and he holds his hands up in mock surrender. “I’m not into him, dude. Don’t stress. I’m still just into chicks.”

Satisfied with his answer, I ask, “What are you here for, besides annoying the shit out of me?”

“Just missed my brother. And ma wanted me to make sure you were okay. I have to report back like a good little soldier.”

I snort. “I’m fine. I’ll call her.”

Luke shrugs. “Come out this weekend, and we can wheel, work on the Jeep a bit.”

“Can’t. I have a thing.”

“What thing?”

“A thing.”

He narrows his eyes at me. “And why was I not invited to thisthing?”

“Because.”

Luke huffs. “Whatever. Keep your secrets, asshole. I’ll find out eventually. But you’re not ditching on the Fourth of July. It’s a family tradition. Bring Mag if you have to. Just don’t bail. I bought like a shit ton of fireworks. We are going to blow shit up.”

“I won’t.”

“You better not, or I’m going to hunt you down. Drag you kicking and screaming back home.”
