Sem swallows down some more beer and grabs some plates from the cupboard, and I want to smash them onto the floor. I’m having a tantrum, apparently. Haven’t grown out of that stage yet.

“Tell me, Sem, before I break every plate in this house.”

He raises his eyebrows. “Nah, you wouldn’t do that. You love these plates. Bought them off Etsy.”

“Oh, wouldn’t I?” I raise an eyebrow and feel like I’m slowly slipping off the edge of sanity. He must pick up on that vibe because he sighs heavily and then rubs a hand down his face.

“Listen, Maggie. The truth is…It’s because I’m not…I’m notenoughfor you.”

“What the hell does that even mean?”

“It means what it means.”

This man is going to give me an ulcer.

“You have to tell me what itmeans, Sem. Just saying some cliché phrase like that doesn’t mean it has meaning.”

Sem looks confused, and I point at him and then at myself. “Why areyounot enough forme?”

“Just leave it.”

“I will not.”

He rolls his neck, then moves toward me with a towel in his hand. He pulls at it, and I eye it nervously.

“What are you doing?” I ask as he stops in front of me menacingly. Something dangerous flashes through those blue eyes, and I swallow roughly.

He runs a finger down my cheek, and then he pushes me gently backward until I’m sitting in a chair.

“I’m going to tie you up now.”

“Um,no,you’re not. We are having an adult conversation here. You were just going to open up and tell me why you think you’re not enough for me. We were going to express ourselves openly and honestly.”

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out two more restraints, and I seriously question my judgment. Because apparently, I’ve been fucking some kind of psychopath.

But I knew that already, didn’t I, and I did it anyway.

“Do you have a shovel somewhere? Some lye as well? Large pieces of plastic to wrap up bloody bodies?” I ask with a little too much snark.

Sem reaches for my hand, but I yank it away.

“Like hell you’re tying me up,” I huff and quickly lift up my legs and kick them against his chest. The sudden movement surprises him, and he stumbles backward, giving me enough time to slide off the chair and run.

I yank open the door to the apartment and rush out, my heart beating frantically in my chest as a laugh bubbles out of me.

Oh my god. I’m just as crazy as him. It’s verified at this very moment.

Thundering footsteps move up behind me as I scurry down the stairs, but I don’t look back, just pump my legs harder. But I know it’s futile; he’ll catch me eventually. It’s inevitable with how much taller he is than me. I zig-zag around the outside of the complex, trying to evade his swiping hands, but eventually, he manages to grab me.

An arm snakes around my waist, and I’m yanked into his arms.

“Sem!” I squeal, drawing the eyes of a few people who live around here. I wave and smile at them because I don’t want them to call the cops on us. This is just some harmless fun.

“We’re all good!” I call out. “My husband can’t get it up unless he feels like a predator, if you know what I mean,” I add with a giant smile and a wink.

The people, who have stopped and are now staring, begin whispering to each other as I’m flailing in Sem’s arms and completely rethinking my life choices. Sem doesn’t say a word, just grunts and throws me over his shoulder.

“Goddamn, you and Caleb are always pulling this shit,” I hiss as I slap at his lower back.
