One eyebrow goes up, and he just stares at me. I squirm in my seat. Jesus, this guy has a way of making me nervous.

He should work for the FBI.

“That’s weird, even for you.”

“Yeah, well, it all worked out, didn’t it?”

Whit glances over at Sem, who’s watching us talk. A beer dangles from his hand as he leans against the side of Luke’s RV, chatting with his brother. He doesn’t remove his gaze from us, and I slightly shift in my seat.

“He doesn’t like you talking to me,” Whit says.

“Really? Why do you think that?” I ask, slightly unconvinced.

“Does he know we were together for a while?” Whit asks.

“Yeah.”

“And he seems possessive of you….”

“Well, yes, he is, but he’ll have to get used to us talking because you’re marrying Caleb. And I plan on sticking around for a while, so….”

Whit takes a sip of his water and then lowers his voice and leans toward me a little. “I’ve been meaning to ask you…” He clears his throat and then asks, “Would you stand up on my side for the wedding?”

My eyes widen at that because I was not expecting that at all. “Are you serious? Like the best man?”

He huffs. “Don’t get so excited….”

“Oh, Whit, I already am. I’m going to be your best man!”

Whit taps his fingers on his thigh. “Please, keep it down. It’s not that big of a deal.”

I bounce a little in my seat and then lean toward him, “Ooh. What are your colors? Have you discussed that? Flower arrangements? Where’s the venue?”

Whit’s rubbing at his chest, looking nervous.

“Ooh, can I throw you a wedding shower? Please, please?” I grab onto his arm and squeeze. “I happen to be fabulous at party planning.”

He glances down at where our bodies connect, and I quickly pull my hand away. “Sorry. I got a little too excited about this. I am very happy for you two.”

“It’s okay. And perhaps you should speak to Caleb and his aunt about the wedding. They know all the details.”

“Oh my god, I cannot wait. Who else is in it?”

“Luke, Liam, and Sem,” Whit begins and then adds, “I only have you.”

“Oh, Whit,” I say softly, resisting the urge to reach out and touch him. “I’m sorry. Your family sucks, and you deserve so much better.”

He swallows and nods. “I do, but it seems I’ve found another…slightly unconventional family who enjoys having me around.”

“Don’t be silly. They love you.”

“They tolerate me,” Whit mutters, and I roll my eyes.

“You’re such an Eeyore. They love you, Whit. I promise. They’re happy Caleb is so in love with a wonderful man. I mean, just look at him over there. He can’t keep his eyes off you. It’s like he wants to come bounding over here and sit on your lap.”

Whit huffs, his fingers tapping nervously on the arm of the camping chair.

“He does, doesn’t he?”
