Whit shakes his head. “Everyone is different. You’ll have to ask him.”
“Nah, man. We’re not there yet. I don’t know what he wants. Mostly I think he doesn’t like me. But he still lets me snuggle with him, so I dunno.”
“Who couldn’t love you?” Caleb replies, then grabs onto the back of my neck and pulls me toward him. We wrestle on the couch for a few minutes and when we look up, Whit is gone, back in the kitchen, wiping the counters down with Clorox wipes.
“I’ll just ask him,” I say.
“Do it,” Caleb says. “Just put it all out there. Be like, do you like me? Check yes or no.”
I pull out my phone, roll my lips between my teeth and then type.
Me:Could you ever like a guy like me?
I tap my foot and seconds later his response pops up on my screen.
Doc:What kind of question is that?
Caleb peers over my shoulder and nudges me. “Just tell him that you’re curious.”
Me:Just curious.
Doc:It’s none of your business.
I glance over at Caleb, and he runs a hand over his mouth. “Just tell him you’re interested.”
“Nah, I can’t do that. It’ll scare him off. He’s already trying to get rid of me. I don’t want to give him a reason to kick me to the curb.”
Me:Do you have a type?
Doc:I do.
My phone pings again, and I frown.
Doc:Where are you?
Me:I’ll tell you when you tell me what I want to know.
I can almost hear him sighing, and my fingers fly across the screen.
Me:Come on. Tell me. What is this type of yours?
Doc:Where are you?
I stare at my phone and then shove it between my thighs.
“He’s not going to answer me. He’s elusive. Like a slippery little eel.”
Caleb scratches his stomach, deep in thought.
I lean my head back. “He probably doesn’t want to hurt my feelings. That’s gotta be it.”
“You think he’s not into you?” Caleb says. “Because you’re fucking awesome. So, if he isn’t, he must have terrible taste.”
“Meh, I dunno, but Eli is…” I bite the inside of my cheek and stare at the ceiling. “He’s different. He’s hard to get to know. He’s all closed off and quiet.”
“So? When has that ever stopped you? Just keep sticking around, and he’ll fall for you one day.”
“Yeah?”
