Lex inhales deeply through his nose. “Ah. I love toxic mold spores. Could get high off this shit.”

Oh my god.

I move farther away from him and lean against a wall that looks relatively clean.

I watch Diablo work to pass the time and ensure he doesn’t do anything shifty to my phone, like install spyware. But no, he seems intent on just fixing the broken glass. He’s quick and efficient; twenty minutes later, he’s holding up my fixed phone.

“Done. Record time.”

Lex tilts his head to the side, a sucker hanging from his lips, his legs propped up on the couch arm, and he waggles his eyebrows.

“You’re the motherfucking best.”

Diablo puffs up a bit. “I am, and nowyouoweme.”

I push off the wall and grab my phone. I turn it on and then click on my messages.

My heart falters and then sinks. A heavy sigh escapes me. No new messages from Luke. But the ones I’d sent him blink up at me like a bad premonition.

Damn.

“Why the fuck is he sighing like that?” Diablo asks. “Does he have to shit?”

“Nope. He is pining,” Lex replies and then nudges me. “I can read you like a book. Come on. Let’s go.”

“Fine,” I say and follow Lex up the steps and back to my car. We slip inside, and I stare out the windshield.

“So, what’s the plan now?” Lex asks, leaning back and eyeing me.

Do not do it. Do not even think about it. You will not.

“Want to hang out?” I ask.

Lex pops his sucker from his mouth.

“Thought you’d never ask.”

CHAPTERTWELVE

ELLIOT

Idrive Lex to his car, which is still parked at my office, and then he follows me home. But I debate just driving by when I see my sisters hovering right outside my front door. They’re watching my car approach so there’s no escaping them now. Their gazes widen when they see Lex stepping out of his car and sashaying toward them.

“Who is this?” they ask in unison.

Luke’s right. It’s eerie.

Lex doesn’t think anything of it, though. He just does his weird half curtsey-squat. “Lex, at your service.”

They take him in. All of him, from his silver hair and pierced face down to his ripped jeans and black combat boots.

“And where did you two meet?” Jane asks.

Lex smiles widely. “At his office. He looked soverypathetic, so I took pity on him and decided to be his friend. And who are you?”

“His sisters,” they say all at once.

“Ah,” he replies and lifts each of their hands, pressing kisses on the back of each.
