Page 55 of Until Him

“Who’s your friend?” Landon asks, smirking as he watches me.

“Theo,” I say, and Theo just holds the blanket up to his chest, blinking at the audience he suddenly has. He looks shy, and I kind of like it. “He’s tutoring me in chemistry,” I explain.

Landon’s eyes widen slightly and fuck it all. Finn is such a blabber mouth.

“Oh. I see.”

Finn eyeballs me and then moves to stand a little closer to Landon.

“I’ve heard about you, Theo, and how you’re helping Logan,” Landon says and then reaches across me, holding out his hand. “I’m Logan’s brother, Landon. Nice to meet you.”

Theo slides his hand into Landon’s and Finn narrows his eyes at the point of contact, his arm moving around Landon’s waist. It almost seems like a possessive gesture. Interesting.

Part of me really wants to know what the hell is going on between them because it seems pretty obvious at this point. I should ask, but it’s not something I can even deal with right now. I’ll just file it undershit to deal with later, like I do with everything else in my life.

I force my gaze away from the two of them and push myself upright.

“Sorry about that,” I mutter and then stand up, pulling my brother into a hug. His arms slide around me, and he presses into me.

And damn, there go my eyeballs, all watery and shit.

“Missed you,” Landon whispers, and I sniffle loudly.

“Missed you too,” I manage to say back, even though my voice comes out three octaves too high. I sound like I sucked helium.

When we pull apart, I see that my brother’s eyes are a little wet too. Runs in the family apparently. I take a good look at him, head to toe. We look similar, although his hair is straighter than mine and cut shorter, and his body is slim, compared to my broad torso. He looks good. Healthy and happy. It makes my eyes water even more and I have to swipe at them.

I’m such a fucking sap.

Finn is watching the two of us closely and as soon as we step away from each other, he sidles himself right back up to Landon again; overprotective, as usual.

“So, what are we doing today?” I ask, trying to lighten the mood.

“I thought we could go to the redwoods. It’s not that far away and it’s really beautiful this time of year,” Landon says and Finn grumbles something under his breath.

“You sure?” I ask, forcing myself not to look at his fucking leg. It’s not there anyway.

Goddammit.

“I can walk just fine, Logan. Don’t worry,” Landon says softly, his eyes on mine. “I really am fine. This new prosthetic is amazing. Finn, tell him.”

“It is amazing,” Finn tacks on, parroting what Landon said.

I peek down at the new prosthetic and then force my gaze away.

“Sure, we can do whatever you want,” I tell him, even though I’ll fucking worry the entire time. What if he trips? What if he gets hurt again and it’s my fault? Landon doesn’t need me hovering. Besides, Finn does enough of that already.

Suddenly, Theo stands up and says, “I’ve never been. To the redwoods, I mean. And I could really use some coffee.”

All of our eyes swivel toward him, and he flushes slightly from the attention.

“Perfect,” Landon says with a wide smile. “Let’s get ready, Finn, and then we can go.”

Landon reaches out and slaps me on the back before clutching my arms tightly in his hands. “We have a lot to catch up on.”

I swallow roughly and nod.

Yeah. We fucking do.
