He should have known. Of course, no-filter Rayma would bring up Laura. She’d want to know exactly what was going on and why Jordan didn’t call her when he got back.

She’d been kind enough not to demand those answers from him earlier that night at the bar and in front of Laura, but now that they were alone, he knew she’d be coming at him with questions.

“How long have the two of you been together, hmm?”

On the outside, she was all pleasant smiles, but he knew inside she was a thunderstorm of emotions, probably still riding some of those last waves of adrenaline from earlier, which were only fueling her desire to know more about him and Laura.

“Can we not do this right now, please?” he asked, a grumble coming out on the back end of his words as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Not do what?” she asked innocently, though it was all a ploy. Tension rolled off her and the way she was nervously bouncing her knee as she sat there in the back seat of the cab said she was wound as tight as a top. “I just mentioned your beautiful girlfriend and that she seems nice.”

“She is nice.”

“That’s great.”

“It is.” He cast her a sideways look.

She blinked flirtatiously at him. “So, how long have the two of you been dating?”

“Enough, Rayma, I don’t want to do this. I just want to make sure you get home safe.”

She smiled at him bitterly. “Now you care?”

“I’ve always cared. Never stopped caring. You know that.”

“Bullshit,” she exploded. “You fucking ghosted me, Jordan. Just stopped answering my texts. And then when I went and actually fucking called you and left a few voicemails like a desperate tool, you didn’t even acknowledge those. You ghosted me and now you expect me to just… what? Listen to you? Do as you say? Newsflash, Lassie, we’re not dating. Your closet alpha dominant thing doesn’t have the same effect on me as it once did. I’m not playing yourpretty girlwho likes to wear your hands as a necklace.”

At that, the cabby made an uncomfortable grunt in the front seat.

Jordan’s cheeks were starting to heat up.

“I didn’tghostyou. We broke up.”

“Amicably. And not because we wanted to. We broke up because you got transferred and I wasn’t done with school. It made sense to break up, but we didn’t do it with anger. And then we talked—a lot—after you first moved. I visited you, we humped like bunnies. You visited me and tried to choke me with your monster dick.”

The cabby coughed.

“We were like friends with benefits. Emphasis on thefriends. So you ghosted your friend, asshole. If you wanted to see other people or stop fucking once every eight weeks you could have just said so and not cut me out of your life completely.”

Jordan slumped in the seat and let out a frustrated sigh. “I thought I was doing the right thing. That by making you talk to me and stay in touch I wasn’t letting you move on. You were only twenty, you didn’t need to be hanging on and pining for your ex-boyfriend.”

She let out a bark of a laugh. “Ego much? We agreed not to be exclusive when we ‘broke up’but continued to bone. I did go on dates. Just because we were talking and staying in touch doesn’t mean I wasn’t stillalsogetting over you. I’m a really good fucking multitasker. Or have you forgotten how exceptional I am at sucking dick while also sticking a finger up your ass?”

The cab driver cleared his throat and shifted in his seat.

Jordan’s eyes went wide.

Rayma didn’t seem fazed in the least.

“I thought I was doing the right thing,” he exclaimed, repeating himself which just did a great job reminding him of how royally he screwed up.

“Well, you thought wrong. You broke my heart.Twice!First as your girlfriend, and then again as your friend. Typical Lassie, your communication skills blow chunks. Youthinkyou’re protecting me when you’re just making the situation worse.”

A lump the size of a golf ball covered in thorns got hung up in the back of his throat as he tried to swallow.

“And now you’re back in town and didn’t even have the decency to let me know. I had to run into you at the bar of all places, with a beautiful woman who I desperately want to hate, but already know I won’t be able to do because I just know deep down she’s a nice person.”

“She’s a very nice person,” he said quietly.
