"Would you like to go to lunch, and have you ever been on a motorcycle, and would you like to go now?" His eyes fell to my lips.

I pressed them together like I could taste him.Say no… say no…

"One minute. I just need to talk with myself." I held up a finger of silence which caused another rumble of laughter to ripple through his chest.

I really should say no.The sensible voice in my head put motorcycles and strangers into the definite no category, but I didn't want to. This was my shot at doing something exciting and fun.

Thoughts of the doctor's appointment tried to push their way in. Like the conversation that my mother hadn't been a part of, which was the same one I'd have to tell her about. That meant telling her that there were changes in my blood count. Nothing drastic—at least I didn't think so—but something that needed to be watched. But when she heard, my life would once again become a regimented hell.

That wasn't the part of the doctor's chat that had worried me the most. There was more. The doc had said I needed to try harder to live, which sounded more like a warning and not a lifestyle choice.

Mom would scream at me for being reckless if I went to lunch, but I didn't care. I wanted to spend time with this gorgeous stranger. I wanted to eat with him and ride on the back of a motorcycle.

"Motorcycle?" My lips quivered.

"Think of it as an adventure," he said, his eyes narrowing.

"I have my car," I added, thinking we could take that.

"I could drop you back here to collect it. My friend is in surgery after an accident, so I need to come back anyway."

"That's awful. What happened?" My mouth popped open. All sorts of scary scenarios filled my mind.

A faint pink stained his cheeks.

Not so big and burly after all,I thought.

"Remember the rain yesterday?"

I nodded, my mouth a little dry. It had poured and poured yesterday, and I'd spent the day staring at the rain patterns chasing along the windowpanes.

"Well, I told him not to ride in it."

Sounded plausible, and while I'd only known this man for approximately three minutes, I could sense he was careful. A control hung around him, every moment, even every smile, strong and defined.

But… lunch with a motorbike riding stranger?Yes, please,my mind called.

I guess there was one part of that scenario I could deal with straight away.

He was still watching me patiently, head slightly tilted, lips quirked.

"What's your name?" I asked, knowing I couldn't go anywhere without at least having the man's name.

His smile grew, and I swear my panties melted off.

RUSH

“I’m Rush,”I told her, watching her eyes widen in response. She had the most beautiful eyes, like the soft downy of a newborn fawn. More than that, they were so open. As though I could read her life story in the flecks of gold. She had questions. Lots of them. And I wanted to answer them all. So, I did something I rarely did these days. I offered a little part of myself. “Jensen is my real name. Rush is just a nickname. Norton is my last name." I paused and made a face. "Thaddeus is my middle name, after my late grandfather on my mom's side."

Her eyes sparkled and the color seemed to change, like starbursts, the flecks of gold danced with joy.

“Jensen,” she said, testing the sound of my name.

I had to admit I liked how it sounded on her lips. No one called me Jensen anymore but at the same time, it was the only name I could imagine coming from her.
