Chapter 7

Saxton~

I stared down at my phone and felt a few different things. Bothered was the first, with concern being the second.

Hastings: Kincaid is home. She needs sum1 2 talk 2 besides me, I think

While I knew that Hastings Martin had my phone number, she’s never reached out to me before.

For anything.

When she and Kincaid had become roommates, Kincaid had given her my number in case of an emergency. After asking Hastings if it was okay for her to give me her number, I had saved her number in my phone, but I’ve never had a need to use it before.

Staring at the text, there was only one reason that Hastings would be worried about Kincaid. Kincaid wasn’t a delicate flower. She wasn’t fragile, weak, simple, or sensitive. There was only one thing that affected Kincaid deeply, and that was her brother and his death. Apollo had adored Kincaid, so their bond had been a strong one. She lost a piece of herself the day her brother died.

Usually, she spent his birthday and the day of his passing with her parents, so I wasn’t sure why she wasn’t home with them now, but I was going to find out.

My phone chimed again with another text from Hastings.

Hastings: She told me it’s her brother’s birthday

That surprised me a bit. I knew Kincaid trusted Hastings, and had even considered her a friend, but I still never pictured Kincaid sharing something so personal with her. Of course, I didn’t know all the details of what she had shared with Hastings, but still. Kincaid wasn’t the touchy-feeling type, so it must be really hitting her hard that she couldn’t be with her parents.

I sent a quick reply.

Me: I’ll b right over

Hastings: Went shopping, mani/pedi, but still upset, I think

I had to laugh at that. Kincaid wasn’t a girly-girl. Sure, she was beautiful and wore makeup, did her hair, wore perfume, things like that, but she wasn’t a must-have. She didn’t have to have manicures or pedicure. She didn’t have to have the latest handbag or cellphone. If she’d gone shopping with Hastings, and had gotten a manicure and pedicure, it had to be because she’d been trying to make Hastings feel better about her melancholy mood, and not because Kincaid had needed the pick-me-up.

Me: I’ll b there in fifteen

Hastings: Thanks

The last thing that Hastings needed to do was thank me. Kincaid was such a huge part of my life that there was no need to thank me. I’d do anything for that girl.

Exactly fifteen minutes later, I was knocking on Kincaid’s front door. When it swung open, Kincaid was standing on the other side, her face covered in a bright blue, creamy mask.

“Looking beautiful as ever,” I said as I walked in, kissing her on top of her head.

“Liar,” she huffed out dramatically.

Turning around to face her, she just finished shutting the door behind her. “Why the gunk? It’s not like you need it.”

Kincaid made her way over to the couch. “Had a day of shopping, manicures, and pedicures,” she replied. “Thought I’d finish it off with a little self-pampering.”

I sat down next to her, grabbed her legs, tossed them over my lap, then inspected her freshly pedicured feet. Her toes were painted black with splatters of white. They looked like a Pollock painting. “Very pretty,” I commented.

Showing me her fingernails, she said, “I left my nails clean, but the nail technician planted a black gem on my ring finger to match my toes.”

Wrapping my arms around her legs on my lap, I asked, “Why didn’t you call me, babe?”

I watched her entire body relax as she leaned back against the armrest. “I was,” she promised. “It was…last night was a long night, so I thought I’d let you sleep.”

I shot her a look because she knew better. While last night had been a bit much, it hadn’t been our shitshow. After Alexander and his troupe had left, Jennifer had attacked Laney, spewing all kinds of accusations, and it had been left up to August to take control of the mess he had created. Kincaid had recorded the disaster, but Jennifer hadn’t said anything worthwhile about August. All her hate had been directed at Laney, and since Alexander had already made his decision regarding her, we had ended up all leaving them to their little threesome.

“You know better, Kincaid,” I chided.
